Inspired by the decline of the adverb
By AlisonKim
09 July 2008
Just a little instant something! Inspired by an online article about the decline of adverbs in modern writing and speech.

Further note: I often hear adverbs used by teenagers in speech and this inspired me to write my response to the article. The adverb is not dead!

AK x

No?! Really.. seriously? That's totally not true! ..but he's completely gorgeous! No! I definitely don't believe it. But it's so utterly devastating!! Why?! Why would someone so wonderfully handsome like him go out with such a mingy cow like her? I am so totally gutted. She is such a two-faced bitch! I am definitely going to completely cut her now.

The idea is good, but you should weave it into something longer, say about two people. One is against using any adverbs, and speaks without them, while the other loves them and can't stop using them. On its own, it just doesn't make any sense. Ouch!

Thanks TT for the comments. It was an instant response - albeit written at 1am - to an article I'd read.

Interesting thought about how to expand it. Shall give that a go and see what comes of it.

Cheers, AK

Style of writing has changed over the years and what was once acceptable is now frowned upon. Yet I note that no one has seen fit to go back and edit the classics. And so they remain classics; adverbs, proverbs, reverbs, warts-n-all.
No doubt style of writing will change again in the future. Perhaps it will change back? Yet, whatever the style, great writing will remain great writing.
