English Slacker chapter thirty-one
By chrismorton

I’d been walking for a while and was just over half way to Bracksea when I stopped for a rest. My walkman batteries were running low so I turned it off and sat there listening to the sound of the sea; the waves, lapping onto the shore continuously and that.

It was dusk by then. I could see the sun and the moon at the same time. Both were big. And the sky had an orange glow to it.

I took out my papers and stuck three together and then the bag of weed and took a small clump and carefully arranged it into a line along the papers. I took out my backy and covered the green stuff with brown, picked it all up and rolled it around between my fingers and then ripped off a roach from my rizla packet, rolled it all together, licked it and finally held it in my hand looking at my creation.

As I sparked up and as I breathed it all in I remember thinking about how I was having was one of those perfect moments: The dusk, the sound of the waves, being alone sitting there, at one with my thoughts.

Yeah, my thoughts: Again a bit of a blur as I recollect but I know for certain that I thought about Neale’s girlfriend in that dress and imagined how good it would’ve been to lift it up and like run my hand along her arse…

And I also thought about the Price-Saver’s girl that morning, but although this started off as a similar fantasy, somehow I never managed to be able to totally concentrate on her in that, I dunno, in that sort of sexual way or whatever.

Anyway, I followed the same routine with skinning up and thinking about what a cool moment I was having three times (like three joints finished) before Colin turned up.

By then it was nearly dark and stars were starting to appear in the sky and the sun had gone but the moon was really bright so I could still see everything pretty clearly.

I was looking over in the direction of Bracksea, watching the lights turn on one by one and I could hear the sound of crunching, and there was a slight fizzing noise that had started too but I thought nothing of it at the time. I wasn’t really paying attention to anything though, other than to like catch or notice each light as it appeared. But then out of nowhere I caught a glimpse of movement to my right and when I turned to look I could see a figure approaching and it was Colin.

He still had his head shaved and, yeah he was wearing the same clothes as he’d been wearing in High Lanes. He had more colour to his face this time though. Maybe it was the sea air; who knows?

So anyway, as he walked up to me he said, “Hey Chambers, how’re you doing?” and I wondered what exactly he meant by that so I said, “What do you mean?”

I'm still following this, Chris. Colin is a mystery man to me, so I'm curious as to what he'll be willing to say to Chambers (doesn't he have a Christian name? and do none of the others have surnames?) now they have met by agreement. Chambers must be well stoned to want an explanation of Colin's question BTW!

Great to know you're still following. You must have great patience to have put up with his ramblings and wanderings of late.

You make a good point about the surname and first names, I've had similar comments about this from other sources too. I'll leave it for now though, but noted.

I reall don't know what BTW means.

BTW = by the way!

Kids do tend to use either surnames or Christian names, although they are aware that they all have both. That's common practice amongst teenagers.

He's still thinking things through, I notice... very slowly.

Good description of someone rolling a joint, incidentally.
