Who is your Hero then?
By maipenrai

heroes come in all shapes  and sizes

Heroes, it's an hard one is that.

Heroes to me were the
Red Cross Ambulance Crews
shot up picking up the injured
outside Beiruit,
an everyday occurence at the time,
but when the calls came in
they went out,
everyday,
Heroes.

I used to see them
unknown, unsung, forgotten,
the man with his family
in some god-forsaken far away place
poverty and war, grinding
grinding him down.

But this man, this ordinary man
he won't be put down,
no, he won't be put down
he will survive and he will provide
for his family, his loved one's,
just an ordinary man,
Heroes, you find them everywhere.

Heroes, you find them everywhere.

Too true - and not just in the theatre of war either.

It is so moving in this media era of self-publicity and self-promotion, when I find simple ordinary people noone knew about, who have been living sacrificially to help other people. I do think they are hidden in many places but we don't know about them because they don't think of themselves as heroes and don't blow their own trumpet. I think our society hungers for heroes you are talking about.

Yes, we don't hear enough about such people. You get those once a year annual 'hero' awards on tv, which I hate, because they're still run by celebrities. Oh let's reward the ordinary folk by letting them touch the hand of some pop star.

And the constant media coverage of such obviously obnoxious people pisses me off (need I name and shame them?), but I'm rambling!
Thanks

Nathen, the people you are talking about do my head in, i don't know of one who as done anything worthwhile with their live's, the one's that do appear to be doing something of use do it to revive their flagging fortune.

Hi Bernie,

Well, there are those that are just talented at self promotion and they are a waste of space, then there are those that are genuinely talented, but are obnoxious people. Celebrate their talent, fine, but having their faces on the cover of papers every bleedin' day also celebrates their behaviour and attitudes.

Don't buy the papers then someone might say. well, I don't actually, I read them at work, then take them home for my guinea pigs to crap on.
