Battling Joe Ennis
By maipenrai
18 July 2008
Battling Joe Ennis
rode slowly through
Black Cat Canyon
his grey steely eyes
scanning forwards and sideways
for in this place
the Wolf Packs
were always on the prey,
up ahead in the distance
he could see the
storm clouds gathering and
seeking shelter had to be
his main goal now.

SUDDENLY
from up above
a voice rang out!!!!!

"come on Battling Joe
 bed for you me lad
it's gone nine don't yer know"

so Battling Joe Ennis
went away to bed to dream of
other places and
other battles waiting to be won.

lovely! I did not see the denoument coming.
Do kids still play "cowboys and indians"? I think he should have spotted a Cherokee scouting party on the ridge...

I adored this, Bernie - a breath of fresh air! A lovely surprise for the reader, and (for this reader) upon scanning the poem again that first stanza is very perceptive of a child's imagination and impression of the Wild West. I loved it. Veronica asked if kids still play "cowboys and indians" - I have not seen it for a long time, but cannot answer for them all. Answering for this 35 year old - I do whenever I get the chance to sit down in front of a sunday afternoon Western.
Brilliant, Bernie.
Cheers
