English Slacker chapter thirty-six

The first people I met while on my way along the beach were Ambra, Sereme, and this other guy who I knew to be Ambra’s boyfriend – I’d never met the guy before but I immediately knew who he was from his description: Tall with a beard who looked about thirty but wasn’t. From his appearance he at least looked too old to be going out with Ambra, who’s my age: around eighteen at the time.

Ambra and Sereme were walking along arm in arm, clearly deep in conversation while the guy who was obviously Ambra’s boyfriend was sort of moping about around them, trailing behind a bit and that, throwing stones in the sea.

When Sereme saw me she was like, “Hey Chambers!” and ran up to me and gave me a hug. Then she immediately gave me this sad face and said, “Where have you been Chambers?” in a childish sort of voice (which she sometimes used) and then said, “We’ve missed you,” which immediately got my back up actually ‘cause I wasn’t exactly sure who the “We” was supposed to be, but I let it go.

I said, “Well I’m here now,” and she laughed and then sort of gave me a kiss, like, on the lips, almost a snog actually for some reason.

She was wearing a dark, sort of brown coloured (it was hard to tell) dress and her hair was up and she was wearing shit loads of make-up which looked… yeah it looked kinda weird under the moonlight. Really sort of bright but shadowy, like white and red colours but shaded around her face kinda perfectly. But her eyes were smudged slightly which made it look as though she might’ve been crying.

I said, “So how was the beach party?” and she looked back at Ambra and they sort of exchanged this glance and then Ambra said, “Don’t ask,” which made me think that something had probably happened between Sereme and Graz (I remember thinking Graz really is a git; but not in a bad way; actually it almost made me smile, which I immediately felt guilty about).

I said, “You okay?” but then before she got the chance to answer Ambra’s boyfriend came up to me and said, “All right mate, I’m Richard,” and then said, “So you’re Chambers?” and, yeah, he was then looking back at Ambra as if he was asking for some sort of confirmation or something, which I didn’t understand ‘cause Sereme had just a moment before shouted, “Hey Chambers,” but Ambra was already talking to Sereme again in like a hushed tone (I couldn’t make out what they were saying).

I said to Richard, “Have you guys just been to the beach party?” and he was like, “Well, we are on the beach,” which I didn’t understand at first but then realised it was some kinda joke and actually by that time he’d already said, “Yeah,” and, “Are you going there now?” so I said, “No I’m just walking along the beach ‘cause I fancied a walk in the dark just for fun,” and that I wanted to look at the moon and the stars and the lights of Bracksea and the cliffs reflecting in the moonlight and it was now his turn to pause before he laughed uncertainly and said, “Cool.”

So I talked to Richard for a while, who was a bit posh but all right, and threw stones in the sea, listening to him go on about how he loved Bracksea and how he wanted to live there and bring his kids up there ‘cause of it being the, “Perfect place to spend your life,” saying about the beach and the countryside all around and how Firkinton was only an hours drive away and that.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure what to say to all this really. I didn’t wanna disagree ‘cause he seemed so like passionate with what he was saying, and actually he was making a good point but I did say how, “It’s different when you’ve been here all your life,” and he then said, “Maybe,” and that he’d spent most of his life in Giglinham, which was, “A dump.” And I remember thinking then about how at least he’d had a decent football team to go and watch and when I said that he said, “Yeah, that’s true,” and then we talked about football for a bit.

Anyway, after that I asked him what the beach party was like and if it was still going on and he said, “Yeah, there’re people still down there,” so I said, “Cool,” and, “I’m gonna head over there now I reckon.”

Sereme and Ambra had walked a bit further up the beach by then, which I thought was kinda rude (like, not to me: to Richard), and actually I felt a bit sorry for him suddenly, having to follow his girlfriend around, and I said, “So how come you guys aren’t still there?” and he looked over at Ambra and said, “Yeah, well, you know…” and I said, “Do you fancy a quick joint?” but he said, “No, it’s okay,” and that he didn’t smoke.

Something has happened at the beach party, hasn't it? Something involving Chambers, perhaps? Perhaps he really was walking around naked, not dreaming at all.

Again, your teenage-speak is brilliant, bang on.
