The worst job I ever had. The best one too.

I have only had 4 real jobs in my life. You know, the kind where you get a paycheck at the end of the week and taxes are paid. I've done plenty of the other kind of work too. You know, the kind where you get paid dirty wads of bills behind Uncle Sam's back. My first work experience was when I was twelve years of age. My friend and I would take our dads' lawn mowers all over the neighborhood ringing doorbells hoping some poor sap would give us a couple of bucks to cut their grass. We got a few bucks each a few times, but the endeavor was short lived.

Since then I have done all manner of absurd things for a little green, none of which I would ever want to do as a full time job. When I was 17, my dad would make me dress up in "nice" clothes and apply for bagboy positions at local supermarkets. I put in a ton of applications with no intention of even getting the job. It wasn't till a year later that I would actually work for a supermarket bagging grocieries. That was my first real job. I held that job for a few months and then I worked for a BBQ resturaunt washing dishes and I held that job for a few months too and then quit on New Years Eve. I was then unemployed for 9 months before finding employment in a bulk mail communications type company for almost seven years and quit when I moved out of state 8 years ago. With the exception of my 1st two jobs that I only worked for a few months, I have started at the bottom and worked my way up to a wage that can actually support me. Well, not really.

I like to complain about my job probably as much as you do and my job has come close to taking me out a few times, but it's both the worst and best job I've ever had. I get 3 weeks paid vacation, sick days, 401k, insurance, and a perk from time to time and a competitive salary. Looks good on paper, but that's about it. It doesn't feel good. I suppose I am a lot like a lot of you. I identify with the working class, their work ethic, all the shit that goes with putting in an inch only to have 50 miles taken from us. A guy I work with has had over 200 jobs, last he counted, and that's something I can't even begin to imagine. Like I said, I've only had 4 jobs. In my 34 years walkin' the Earth, I've never been fired from a job, I've always quit before they could fire me. Sometimes quiting just makes sense.

We don't have to like our jobs. I don't even think we are supposed to. Unless you are self employed working on yuor own terms, with your own hours, you probably don't like your job. I've never liked any job I've ever had and I suspect I never will. That's the way it goes. If I ever get another job, I'm sure you'll hear about it and I won't like that job either.
I'm sure of it.

Hey PTL,

Your right when you say we're not supposed to like our jobs. I only know one person who actually has not only a job but a career and they love it. Everyone else hates their job and spends their days watching the clock.

I stacked shelves at a supermarket for 5yrs will doing my degree and I hated every minute of it. Worst still I've now got a job where my degree doesn't even matter. I could've got the job without my crappy, worthless degree.

Anyway my rant over, nice piece, pretty much sums up a lot of peoples feelings towards all the crap jobs we do.

Work to live - though my salary doesn't seem to go that far at the moment.

Interesting piece. Felt you glossed over in one or two places - but well worth the time.

I've read from Reader's Digest that somewhere between 50-60% of people don't enjoy their work, that most people derive their pleasure from relationships in their lives, and many people today make major career changes 3 times in their lives. That is proving to be true in many people's lives that I know of.

But I have to say I've mostly liked the jobs I've had. What I found hard at times, were the deadlines, unforeseen hiccups, politics, strained relationships etc. But by far, being a mother is the hardest job I've had, but the most satisfying.

I think it would be ideal if we could derive maximum pleasure from both our work and our relationships, so I always encourage my husband (and myself) to work towards closing that gap, to make calculated sacrifices to do what each of us really want to do, part time, spare time, or full time.

I also think for most of us, it takes time and experience, trial and error, to find out what we really want to do long-term and what we are really good at.

I hope you are on your way to finding out!
