Joy, anxiety, happiness and hope
Come in various forms from all around the world
But never together in unison
As in the Olympics
Every four years
As the world gathers together
For a moment
Everyone forgets about racism
As athletes walk in the stadium
The world all around claps in joy
Welcoming the spirit of game
For once, the world unites in happiness
Every single heart’s aspiration
Filled with joy, happiness and hope
As the celebration unfolds
The joyous occasion relives history
The extravaganza of various cultures
Join hands to make one world
For a moment the beautiful scenario
Makes everyone to forget the other side of reality
How I wish
If the world would always remain united
Forgetting racism, hatred and jealousy
To bring out the best in each other in the spirit of competition
As the Olympics unfolds today in China
The world is glued together
Watching every single moment
Yes, it is the only moment when the world forgets racism!

Well I, for one, will not be watching a single moment of it, so I suppose that's world harmony up in smoke. Cheers. Eric.

We should work together to do good in the world, not evil. Thank you for this lovely poem Johnny. | Written by Veronica_Milvus (768 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | | If only. It is completely political. and in the end, who cares much if you can run faster than him, or he can jump higher than you. It is meaningless! | Written by Phil (7001 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | When the competition begins, I'll be interested. As for the political clap-trap dressed up as feel-good togetherness: I'd rather rather pull my own toe nails. Perhaps I'm a cynic - glad you got something from it. Phil | Written by Phil (7001 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | | Sorry - for the record - I wish the world could forget racism - along with a lot of other things. | Life is how you take it... Written by JohnnyD (106 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | The poem is my experience and my wish. Each time the Olympics are held, the world unite and it is that spur of the moment (OPENING CEREMONY) when no one really cares of who you are and from which country you belong. The celebration in the name of Olympics is truly magical and majestic in proportion... As I say, life is how one takes it to be... only few are the real winners while one can find losers everywhere. There are many, who don't even know such an extravaganza exists in this world but then the Olympics is the most prestigious sporting event in the world. While Eric feels world's harmony is up in the smoke, for Veronica it's meaningless. But there will always person like Josie, who will understand what it takes to spread a cheer of goodness... I am glad for two losers there's one winner at least... my poem has worked and so does the Olympics... whether you care or not... Life is beautiful only if you wish it to be in spite of all the hardships... | Written by mr_soul (126 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | Ofcourse I agree with the sentiments expressed in this poem and I wish peace and equality would last in the world. And I also feel that you done a good job with this poem, it was effective in putting your ideas across, so well done for that. I'm afraid I can't get excited about the Olympics either. Its all political. I'm not really interested in the sports played at it, but its the false harmony that gets to me. China's human rights record is shocking, The Communist Party have a tight grip on the country. Then we have George W condemning them! He also has a bit of a cheek after his disgraceful record as president. Its all a bit of a farce. And I also don't buy into the fact that it takes an Olympics to create economic regeneration, a reason being used to justify the games coming to London. A poor excuse in my opinion. But as I said, a good thought-provoking poem | Written by Brett (1001 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | I wish I had your optimism, Johnny. But, like several reviewers, I agree that it is hyped up political spin. Entertaining enough for those that like the sports involved, but the Olympics does nothing for world harmony. I also think you have taken some reviewers remarks out of context - Eric was being merely sarcastic (nothing wrong with sarcasm) and I think Veronica was referring to the Olympics political facade being meaningless not world harmony. Besides can you blame people for being cynical - look at all those who really did something for world harmony: Martin Luther King, Ghandi, (an old argument, maybe). Cheers | Understanding a poem Written by JohnnyD (106 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | Thank you Mr Soul! Yes, I absolutely agree with one and all that the hype around the olympics is farce, that is why I have lines, which say - For a moment the beautiful scenario Makes everyone to forget the other side of reality However, I also wish everyone to understand that this poem speaks about THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT, when everyone forgets racism... (Opening Ceremony) Each country has got its own problems and each individual is fighting a war on its own to survive... that is why it is my wish... how wonderful the world would be if we all compete to be the best without any malice or prejudice... once again it is indeed just IMPOSSIBLE... In fact, our lives and society is totally farcical and full of hypocrisy... but do we really care? Thank you Brett and there will always be difference in opinion... While you saw sarcasm in Eric's views, I could see him being negative in his approach in accepting the beauty in life... Being cynical is something else and being negative about the beautiful gift called LIFE is altogether different. While for many Gandhi had done wonders... for me he divided a beautiful nation into two...to create an undying passionate anti-nation feelings between one nation divided into two... Views will always differ among humans but being optimistic about LIFE is something I have always believed in because I have seen life from a very close quarters... My poem is a reflection of how I see life and the beautiful things that it has in store for one and all... I love the way everyone has expressed their views for my wishful expression... Thank you one and all... Love your life and respect others... the joy you will experience is limitless... | Written by bobc (51 comments posted) 8th August 2008 | | I think the Olympics were created to make discussion and non-violent competition come to the forefront instead of hypocritical, deadly wars. And this poem does that too! |
