For Children
Pegasus, the Midnight Horse
By Katanga
09 August 2008

Joanna, my partner, works for a primary school where each classroom is named after a mythological animal - she has named hers 'Pegasus' and asked me to write something for the children. Hence this piece . . .

I find it highly amusing - imagine her being summoned by the head and saying, "Sorry, can't come right now - I'm busy with children in The Loch Ness Monster.!

I want to insert a picture at the top, but I can't work out how to do it! Can anyone help?

Try googling 'Pegasus' or finding him in Wikipaedia - amazing Greek mythology!

He's also a constellation . . .

Bellerophon, the hero, caught and tamed Pegasus, and presented him to the Muses at Mount Parnassus. Afterwards, he became the horse of the Muses and he was at the service of the poets.

Rather apt, eh?!

Cheers!

John X

Pegasus the Midnight Horse

Pegasus is a winged horse,
Who rides the midnight skies.
He takes off with a joyful leap
And through the night he flies.

He loves all little children, and
When you’ve gone to bed,
Sleeping with your teddy bear,
He’s wide awake instead.

He watches over all of us.
Look up at the stars and see
If you can find him in the sky,
Watching you and me.

Don’t be afraid of Pegasus,
He’s a very friendly horse.
He’ll take you for a ride one night -
If you’re nice to him, of course!

So close your eyes, my little one,
And dream of fields above,
Where Pegasus is grazing
And looking down with love.

He will never shy away,
Of this you can be sure,
Till we’re too old to believe in him
Or fairies anymore.

So close your eyes again and dream
And ride in midnight’s sleep.
Know that Pegasus has a heart
That’s loving, kind and deep.

Oh - how truly lovely John. This will be a very big hit with the children. You have a lovely rhythm to this poem too which suits it wonderfully. Excellent.

This really is lovely. I actually found it quite soothing. I think it would be nice put in a frame and put up on the classroom wall.

Thank you both so much! Your comments warm my heart!

I have changed the second line in stanza three from,

'Close your eyes and see'

to,

'Look up at the stars and see'

because Pegasus is a real observable constellation.

'Close your eyes . . .'comes later anyway.

I hope you approve of this change?

Thank you both also for your advice on putting in a picture - if you find the time to revisit this, I hope you'll find a picture inserted!

BTW I am pleased to report that Joanna is going to put this up on her classroom door and read it to her children, who have speech and language difficulties, and explain a bit of the mythological background.

So, I'm off to have supper, dead chuffed!

PS Please don't take any notice of my 'Anyone for Sherry?'.

It's very rude and probably not quite your cups of tea.

Cheers!

Ah great poem John! I don't really know what else to say apart from the fact that I thought this was brilliant, truly imaginative and will definitely be a hit with children. I'm sure they'll love this.
If only there were a few more Pegasus in the world! What a nice, interesting character he sounds.
Nicely written, enjoyed this very much.
