Pegasus, the Midnight Stallion
By Katanga
10 August 2008

I put this in the children's section last night, but then thought it might appeal to the 'child within' of adults, so I am tentativey posting it here as well.

'The revered Joanna', my partner, works for a primary school where each classroom is named after a mythological animal - she has named hers 'Pegasus' and asked me to write something for the children. Hence this piece . . .

I find it highly amusing - imagine her being summoned by the head and saying, "Sorry, can't come right now - I'm busy with children in The Loch Ness Monster.!

Try googling 'Pegasus' or finding him in Wikipaedia - amazing Greek mythology!

He's also a constellation, of cousre . . .

Bellerophon, the hero, caught and tamed Pegasus, and presented him to the Muses at Mount Parnassus. Afterwards, he became the horse of the Muses and he was at the service of the poets.

Rather apt, eh?!

Cheers!

PS Joanna came up with the line 'He will never shy away' to replace my more prosaic 'He will never leave us now'. Much better, I think!

Pegasus the Midnight Stallion

Pegasus is a winged horse,
Who rides the midnight skies.
He takes off with a joyful leap
And through the night he flies.

He loves all little children, and
When you’ve gone to bed,
Sleeping with your teddy bear,
He’s wide awake instead.

He watches over all of us.
Look up at the stars and see
If you can find him in the sky,
Watching you and me.

Don’t be afraid of Pegasus,
He’s a very friendly horse.
He’ll take you for a ride one night -
If you’re nice to him, of course!

So close your eyes, my little one,
And dream of fields above,
Where Pegasus is grazing
And looking down with love.

He will never shy away,
Of this you can be sure,
Till we’re too old to believe in him
Or fairies anymore.

So close your eyes again and dream
And ride in midnight’s sleep.
Know that Pegasus has a heart
That’s loving, kind and deep.

I'm sure there are many of Joanne's children who will love this - and it is well done. In tone or message, not to my taste - personally or for fodder for children - but that's a personal thing and I wouldn't let it bother you.

Nicely done, but definitely for the little 'uns!
I would like a poem about the mythological Pegasus, not the astronomical one - for kids or adults; as a child the Greek myths were my introduction to books, storytelling, a whole new world.
Cheers
