Sleep Well
By briarcroft
15 August 2008
Written on Memorial Day for my father, a WWII veteran, a Marine who served 36 months without a break in the South Pacific.

Part of who you were
Served three long years overseas.
Only mentioned obliquely
If asked, never really answered.

We knew you were battalion leader
Spending endless nights sleepless,
Unsure if you'd see the dawn
Only to dread the coming day.

We knew you lost friends
And your innocence;
Discovered strength
In the mama's boy who cried too easily.

Somehow life prepared you:
Pulled your daddy out of bars when you were ten
Watched him beat your mama
Until finally strong enough to stand in the way.

Then at twenty, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian:
Blood soaked beaches
Now restored, masquerading
As vacation resorts.

You thought about returning,
To see what had changed.
Instead chose to stay home
Sleeping soundly through the night.

I let you go without knowing
Your full story:
You could not share the depth
Of horror and the fear.

It was not shame that silenced you;
Simply no need to revisit the pain
Of recollection.
It was done; it was finished.

As I bring flowers and flag, instead
I lay down regret-
Questions unasked, unanswered
Of a sacrifice beyond imagining.

Sleep well, Daddy.
I pray you wake to a new and brighter dawn.

What a gem of a poem Emily and what a tribute to a great man in your life. How proud you must be to have him as your Daddy.

I had an uncle who was a POW in Japan for three and a half years. He also was "silenced" because he didn't want to recall the pain. We heard some snippets, but not too much.

A very quiet and thoughtful feel to this poem.

thanks.

I have to say it

It is a pity that this beautiful tribute to a brave father has been overlooked in favour of other things on the poetry section. I am very sorry anyway.
So many tears . . .

. . . left unshed.

Beautiful poem.

God knows what's happened to this poetry section - with Josie, this should NOT be lost under the debris of other peoples' neurotic squabbles!

[I apologise for my part in trivialising this site!]

I REALLY admire your poem and all the feeling in it.

My own father was a doctor in WW 2.

He died when I was sixteen years old.

Love,

John XXX
Thank you all

I spotted this one late, so I'm sorry for the late response. I can only echo what Josie and John have said, this is a beautiful poem.
What can I say, you can really feel the emotion in this, you musy have poured your heart out I think. Lovely, it was a great read, well done

Thank you so much for this touching tribute beautifully expressed. It made me feel quite sad but I am not sad about that. A late spot for me as well but I know that encouragement , praise and recognition should not be withheld for such a trivial reason. I think this work would make your Daddy proud and smiling.
