Experimental this one, thought I'd try doing something with the Scots language. I'm not sure if everyone will understand it, it's very similar to English though.
Auld enemies re-sprung agin,
A new day hae broke ye ken
Noo we’re nae feart,
An we hae hert
Fur keek aboot wi’ yer een.
Oor problems, we’re no short o
Yet its braw ideas we’re efter
Nae langer wan
But still guid frein
On oor ain we’ll get stranger.

SUPERB Written by Josie (2847 comments posted) 18th August 2008 | | How come nobody has noticed this wonderful poem Mark! I can't admit to understanding fully every word, being an Englander, but I do get the gist of it. What are "braw ideas"? I wonder Talisker hasn't come here with a review. He hasn't seen it I expect. Again - excellent. | Written by mr_soul (126 comments posted) 18th August 2008 | Thank-you Josie! Yes it was certainly different from everything else I've tried, I had fun writing this. I'm really proud of it. I know it must make for a difficult read if you're not accustomed to Scots, I had to look up some words myself to be sure. I'll "translate" it so everyone knows what it is I'm talking about lol. Old enemies re-sprung again A new day has broke you know Now we're not scared And we have heart For look about with your eyes Our problems we're not short of Yet it's good ideas we're after No longer one But still good friends On our own we'll get stronger Its about the possibility of Scotland deciding to go it alone in the future, there's certainly a debate at the moment. Politically its interesting. I'll make a prediction. If (or when going by the opinion polls) the Tories win the next General election, Scotland is faced with a government that it didn't ask for. So there's a real possibilty of people wishing to break away. For me, I'm not too sure. I'm certainly no nationalist, there's plenty I see wrong about Scotland, and I believe we can often feel bitter towards each other never mind our neighbours. I don't judge people on anything apart from what kind of a person they are. Yet the "braw ideas" was a reference to the left wing policies Scotland stands for, very often our views differ from the rest of the UK (or to be precise, the south of England) so maybe going it alone would be beneficial for Scotland. There's been a few clashes over policy recently, it exposes some differences. I think perhaps both countries would feel better towards each other if the union ended. Though maybe not, its certainly an interesting debate. Thanks Josie, I'm glad you liked it. It was definitely enjoyable to write
| Excellent: Written by solst (34 comments posted) 22nd August 2008 | Mark, it's clear your effort here is unquestionable. Have you read Kathleen Jamie? She was indirectly responsible for me getting in University. I handed a port folio in to the creative writing tutor, with a covering letter explaining I had no qualification. He sent a letter back asking me to write a review of one of her books 'The Tree House'. I enjoyed it so much, the essay turned out pretty well and I was given a place. I don't know how to read the original version you wrote, but the second is class anyway. It is composed and quite generic, ambiguous - making it possible to swim in it. Kathleen Jamie |
