An open letter to the author of 'Why There is no God' - 2006
Dear Dr. Dawkins,
You must be ever so clever
To prove that God's never,
Not ever existed,
Tho' this silly old myth has persisted
For ever so long -
And you've shown it's all wrong.
And, yes,
With Scientific Proofs, no less,
You've explained it and made it quite plain
That Simulation Software in the brain
Created God, and Father Christmas -
And all this time this Truth has missed us!
And, Dr. Dawkins, if it's true
That of all the Great Intellects only you
Hold keys to all mysteries old and new -
Quantum theory, brain and mind,
Enigmas, anomalies of every kind,
Then the simulation softeware in your brain
Makes the explanation very plain!
You, Dr. Dawkins, must be God!

Dawkins' Great Intellect is not alone or omnipotent, he's just our poster child at the moment. And you can't prove or disprove the existence of God, because there's really no scientific evidence either way. All we can say is, there are a number of mechanisms aroud in nature that we used to think were proof of a divine presence, and now we can explain by other means, like natural selection. So the need for a supernatural God is diminished all the time. You are right about theism being a "silly old myth" though. | Written by mr_soul (133 comments posted) 17th August 2008 | How is believing in God silly? As you said, there is no proof either way of God's existence. There's no point though in arguing about it, everyone has their own beliefs. What gets me is people who thrust their views down other people's throats, believing that they know everything. Now many religious people are guilty of this. Yet atheists, such as Mr Dawkins, are also terribly guilty of it, to the point almost where it almost becomes hatred. There's a Scottish journalist, Muriel Gray, she despises religion and religious people, its an obsession to her. What are these people's problems? Ok, they don't believe. But please don't try and "enlighten" the people who do have faith, there's nothing worse than people who try to force opinions onto other people. Let people have whatever faith they want. Sorry, bit of a rant there. Nicely constructed poem. Very thought provoking | Written by Phil (8763 comments posted) 17th August 2008 | While I have no liking for Dawkins' writing style - the big I AM - I can't fault much of his thinking and so therefore find the piece a little off. The piece isn't badly constructed - I just feel it is, at best, a red herring in any debate regarding the existence of god. I try to avoid responding to reviews, but can't resist this time. (Isn't religion a bugger for bringing out the worst?) I don't think Dawkins rams his views down anyone's throat. He is employed to lecture, research and he writes books that you can read or not. He is invited onto media shows to give an opinion. The vast majority of noise about the existence of god comes from believers, not atheists. If faith is strong, it ought to be able to handle the odd challenge. Phil
| Agree with V and Phil Written by Brett (2419 comments posted) 17th August 2008 | Especially with Phil's comment that if a person's faith is so strong, why do they get so upset when that faith is mocked? As for the poem - I felt it stumbled from time to time and could have been improved with the omission of several words, but if you think Dr Dawkins' thinking to be likewise this may have been intentional - but like the existence of God, I don't believe it. Love the poem - love the debate! So far, I'm with Phil . . . Whoooooof! Tolstoy X! | Easy... Written by Talisker (1367 comments posted) 17th August 2008 | To take a swipe at a man of substance and intellect who is also brave enough to stick his head above the parapet and challenge the (imho) hokum nonsense spouted by the faithful. I'm not sure I understand your motive Matt. If you disagree with Dawkins, pick fault in his logic. If you cannot... For me, "The God Delusion" is one of the books of this century or any other. Oli | Well said, Oli. Written by Brett (2419 comments posted) 17th August 2008 | The God Delusion is a tome among tomes. I'd be curious to know how many people of religious persuasion have actually read it front to back - and digested any of it. Cheers | Agree! Written by Katanga (4169 comments posted) 17th August 2008 | Sorry Matt - I am also of the Dawkins persuasion. Cheers! But your piece is very entertainingly challenging - more please! Don't be put off by us old farts! John | Written by Bottleblondesurfer (5077 comments posted) 18th August 2008 | Interesting piece and the clever rhyming held it together well. But surely the point is if Dawkins is God then he is telling us that he doesn't exist or have I read it wrong jane | God help me! Written by MattHews (215 comments posted) 18th August 2008 | | Thanks, Jane Written by MattHews (215 comments posted) 18th August 2008 | | You're on the right track. | Good poetry Written by Robru (319 comments posted) 19th August 2008 | pleasant reading and an interesting concept. However no one will ever come to any decision except the one based on their own belief. That is exactly how it should be, free to choose. I'll leave it there. Cheers Bob |
