THE NICKING OF SOCKS
By MattHews
18 August 2008
I put two in
And one comes out!
What's it all about?
It happens almost every day
I've heard so many people say.

Is there a ghost in the washing machine
What nicks our socks when they are clean?
It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen -
But, really, believe me it's very true,
And I'm sure it also happens to you.

I'm beginning to think that the packets of socks I buy actually contain an odd number!
Cheers

A very common phenomenon in my experience!

Very well put in your piece above!

It used to happen a lot to me at launderettes, much to my mystification, when I used 'service washes.'

There was a perfectly rational explanation, as I discovered when I got chummy with one of the operatives.

It was /still is a common money-making scam . . .

Not to sell the socks, but to dry two customers' washing in a single shared drum (pocketing one drying fee).

Then they made mistakes when sorting out the two separate loads later!

Oh, that takes me back . . .

Good poem!

Cheers!

It never happened to me until my husband moved in. Funny, that. We have a drawer in our bedroom called "death row" where the odd socks await their fate.

I, too, collect odd socks in a separate drawer in case their matching sock turns up. I found two under the old washing machine when I got rid of it, and a couple more in the garden.

. . . Line of Love.

How easily socks drop off!

And one is left with a pair of Victorian bloomers . . .

Ah, I feel something coming on . . .

Waaaaaah!

Socks

Thanks, fellow sufferers! My personal opinion is that there's a Charity Shop in The Great Hereafter where they stock not only socks but all manner of items, such as specs., watches, corkscrews, first-novel drafts and half-eaten apples
