English Slacker chapter forty-five

The others were in The Bowman and it was raining a bit, typical English summer, and I was in a call box phoning up Bradby to see if he could be persuaded to take us to Firkinton in his brother’s car (which Neale had just mentioned that he’d been using to get to Price-Savers). But now he was saying that he didn’t wanna go out in Firkinton anymore ‘cause of having work in the morning.

I was like, “Go on, you know it’s gonna be a good night,” and, “It’s only once a month,” and, “You could just go straight to work and not sleep and sleep tomorrow,” and all that, but Bradby was having none of it. He was all, “No way,” and “I’m not going clubbing and that’s that.”

Although he did say that he’d come out for a quick drink in Bracksea. And I guess that’s when our plans for The Basement fell through; which was more than just a bit of a disappointment for me: at least at first. But then when I walked back into The Bowman everyone seemed to be having a pretty good time I must admit it wasn’t long before I kinda forgot about indie night.

Neale, Duncan, and Graz were all sat there at the table opposite the bar playing drinking games, which I love, so I made headway to get a pint in straight away.

We played the game where you have to pour part of your drink into the pint glass in the middle and toss a coin each to see who has to drink it. And as usual I kept hoping I’d lose and get to drink more. It was well fun.

So, I was just considering getting up to buy my next pint when I noticed this group of girls, sitting on the table opposite us who seemed to be talking about me. One of them kept looking over and then she’d turn back to her friends and they’d all start staring and like giggling and that.

They were all about our age; or maybe a bit younger. All of them pretty fit. All like well done up: make-up and stuff, dressed for clubbing, all drinking wine, and all obviously pissed as fuck. And it was a while before I realised that one of the girls was the one from Price-Savers. She was wearing a hat you see, like a woollen one (yeah, woollen hat but fashionable; a sort of turquoise colour) so I didn’t recognise her straight away. When I saw her this bolt of electricity went through me. It was like, “Shit, it’s her.”

Bradby walked in the pub at that moment, his tall figure coming into view behind the table of girls and I looked up and he met my eye, gesturing to me if I wanted a drink and then he was looking over my shoulder and pointing to the bar, obviously asking the same question to everyone else. And yeah, as I glanced over to the table again I made eye contact with one of the girls, not deliberately, it just happened, and she turned her head back at Price-Savers-girl behind her and said something and then they both looked over at me and it was like: shit, what the fuck am I gonna do now?

Good scene in the pub, Chris, but I have only dim recollections of the girl in PriceSavers. Was she was the one who was waiting for him outside? The trouble is that, when we're reading just one episode at a time, we do tend to forget and lose track more easily.
