Education, Education, Education!
By MattHews

On August 16th 'The Independent' reported that school inspectors are writing to primary school pupils to advise them that owing to the shortcomings of their teachers they may fail in adult life. Ofsted has countered criticism of this policy with the comment that such 'key messages' are 'invaluable tools' in both the process of school inspections and subsequent school improvement. And so, let's go!

Addendum: Maybe my 'creative work' should've featured here,
But I've put it down there,
                      'Cos I'm not too clear
How to cope with this technology!

But I've just learnt how to change the font
So it's exactly what I want.

                      And now, please read below:

Now pay attention, children, and listen to me,
'Cos I regret to say it's clear to see
That all you kids are on the skids -
Can't read or write or do your sums?
Blame your teachers - inadequate bums!
For 'cos of them in life's rat race
You're doomed to take a back-seat place.

Now a bright young kid shows a hesitant hand -
"Please, Mr. 'Spector, I don't understand.
If my teachers are such hopeless slobs,
Whoever gave them their teaching jobs?"

"Ah, kiddy-winky. now let me see -
I think the same lot wot appointed me!"

Good poem. seems your English teacher did his job well. Good rhyme, nice flow...

If someone doesn't pay attention in school and ends up in the gutter than that's no one's fault but his own. Aesop's story about the cricket and the ants... The cricket spent all summer fiddling and making fun of the hardworking ants? Fine, but in winter he died, while the ants had food and shelter...

Fledermaus there is some truth in your review that perhaps it only the lazy who fail at school . It also true that there are many such as myself who fail through either family circumstances or because they don't fit the normal pattern education could do more to cater to the individual in my opinion

Hi meadowcroft.
Just after posting that review, I realized it could be interpreted like that: That's not what I meant though. If someone doesn't have the opportunity to study or if someone's talents are in a different field, it's quite another story, yet if someone does get chances yet refuses to take them, then they are like Aesop's cricket.

As soon as I left school I never looked forward (to paraphrase Jeffrey Bernard) I was quite happy to reach for the gutter and not look at the stars - but I found drunks, gamblers, rogues, prostitutes and bastards taught me more than my formal education; and I also mean literally about literature. I had one decent English teacher, but the drunk who introduced me to Henry V, not to mention Dylan Thomas and the Goon Show will always be a ghost hovering over my CV.
Cheers

Sorry I didn't say anything about the poem - point well made.

Yes, and of a different kind . . .

I think we need more of this from you, Malcolm!

Not my usual cup of tea, but all the better for that!

Political points well made, in a unique way.

Cheers!

You lot are so tough. If I hadn't been failed by an inadquate teacher, I would be a consultant surgeon now.
And I wasn't lazy.

So Malcolm, I am not so sure of your sarcastic tone with this one.
Nor am I . . .

. . . sure of your sarcastic tone.

I like the piece, but where is your real point?

Yo!

A bloody good poem. The subject matter is quite controversial, judgeing from the preceding comments. Herewith is my tuppence worth: teachers are born not made - too many who collect salaries as teachers are only tellers. They 'tell' the students, not' teach' them.
A teacher can show "why", a "teller" can't.

Having said all that I now say that formal education only gives a student the tools to learn. Real education starts when the student has completed his/her structured education.

That might put the cat among the pidgeons.

Cheers

Bob.

I thought this was very funny and witty, but I wonder if I would find it funny if I was a teacher??? I think teachers are like any other professionals. There are some exceptional teachers, some terrible teachers, and many who do their jobs ok. And I can't blame teachers for turning out less than productive members of the society. Most of the time, I think the problem originates from home. That's my 2c worth.

Edutainment! Edutainment! Edutainment!

Pedagogues must be getting something right if 99.9999% of brats pass their sats and 99.99999999999999% get A grades in their GCEs and A-levels.

Interesting piece.

Thanks to all for your diverse views,
Healthy controversy is always good news!
Now, I don't wish to give offence
Or be sarcastic at teachers' expense.
No, Talisker, I don't give much credence
To SATS or league tables -
I think they're sadly sexed-up fables,
And I don't like facile political lies -
It's with teachers and pupils I sympathise;
Teachers, poorly trained, overworked, underpaid,
Abused and misused,
And kids who will never make the grade.

It's the system and ethos that sorely fails,
Political meddling and the mess it entails.

I believe that there are good and bad teachers and pupils, I also believe that bad experiences can ruin both. Like everything else these days, bureaucracy invades every corner of organisation, rarely to good effect.

I thought this was a valuable poem reflecting the way faults in a system provide excuses for those looking for someone to blame for their shortcomings. Positive leadership and a firm structure leave no room for that. IMHO.
