A Postcard From Sussex

POSTCARD FROM SUSSEX

A postcard for you Auntie Joyce, of somewhere you would like,

so sad you don't get 'round so well, since you fell off your bike.

If only you had realised that being ninety three,

you really shouldn't ride along the cycle path, hands free!

You could have been here with us, in the boiling Sussex sun,

we know how much you love the beach and how you like a run.

You've always loved a bit of rock and candy floss on stick,

but I still think that donkey ride, was what destroyed your hip!

We've been here a while but we still haven't seen dear Mother,

performing on her surfboard, in the breakers with your brother.

Singing "Rule Britannia," with her trident in her hand

and terrorising tourists in the Bognor Regis sand!

Still we live in hope and if the wind is blowing right,

we've told her that we'll fly her, on the seafront, as a kite.

Of course you know we tease her but she puts up with our 'quips',

as long as we assure her, that we'll buy her cod and chips.

Well, I'd really better go, we're disco bound tonight,

and Mother wants her hair dyed cherry red, from 'pension' white.

We've got to iron her mini skirt and shine stiletto shoes,

so bye for now, take care and take some water with the booze!

What a woman! I love this Auntie Joyce. By the end of the poem, I was almost rapping it in my mind. Really fun. I'd love to age as excitingly, except for the fall!

Actually I think this would work brilliantly as a children's poem also with some modification.

I like the title to your poem because it blends in with the content within the poem itself, especially when the main character sends a postcard. It's rather like saying "wish you were here". I also think that it would make a good poem for children with some modification.

I bet she wears purple and does outlandish things. A little bit like myself. I took up ski-ing in old age, according to my poem, and I'm painting the town red now. Ski-ing equalled Spending the Kids Inheritance, and it was what Mr Google suggested. Very funny poem. Is the woman you?

Hi mia, steamrail and Josie,

thank you so much for your kind comments, I will give some thought to adapting it for children,

She certainly is outlandish Josie but my own ancient rebellion is in my mind I'm afraid. I now have a disability that eliminates nearly all activity, so I'm outrageous in words only. :grin

Thank you all again, very much indeed,

Pam, children would love this poem exactly as it is. I have written poems which I thought were for pensioners only to find children have come up to me and said "You know ------- poem? I really laughed at this." I think it was the poem in which I said that my mother's advice about eating fruit and vegetables had all been lies for look what it had done to me. Teeth out, glasses, arthritis etc. (Not true) but children laugh at the same things and they really LOVE outrageous grannies. My Groovy Groovy Granny poem went down a treat. Bring it to the children's section afterwards.
Truly Delightful!

Josie - I missed your Groovy Granny poem, but I did see BonBon saying somewhere recently something about how lucky she is to have such a groovy granny!

Cheers!

I think you've found a home here!
Lovely images, faultless rhythym - some very amusing lines here (the donkey ride destroying the hip! - lovely).
Cheers

What images! What a family, far more exciting than mine! Very vividly drawn portraits.
