Victor Meldrew on holiday . . .

Cheers!

Clubbers

Here, wrenched from sleep's full-quiet cradling arms,
I hear the songs of drunken homebound clubbers,
who, raucous as a gang of car alarms,
insult the dawn with thongs, discarded rubbers.
I watch as two in turn proceed to puke
against the tree that grows outside my window.
Will nature offer them some stern rebuke?
Hungover heads perhaps - it's not a sin though.
I wish that we could capture youth again,
be young enough to dance till dawn, unfettered.
Cantankerous age makes me take up my pen
to rail against illiterate youth, unlettered.
It's not with the cicadas' rasping rattle,
but with the bloody clubbers I'll do battle.

'raucous as a gang of car alarms'!
I also enjoyed the shift in reflection at the 9th (like all good sonnets should have) and a very good closing couplet. Nice one, Tolstoy.
Cheers

Now John - I thought you were on holiday, far away from the troubles of life - but what is this then? Not peace and quiet after all? Surely you didn't pack your computer?

Enjoyed, John. And not a little jealous that you've managed to get away. I'd happily tolerate the odd puke slick for a little sun.

Enjoy what's left of your hols.

I like this, too, John. Fun, reflective, observative as well as personal. I really like the rhyme in this one. I need a holiday, too.
