Cleave Poem Challenge
By footy
01 September 2008

In 2006 I came up with an idea for an experimental poetic form called the Cleave Poem.

Then came the questions: is it possible or desirable to create a new poetic form?

One of my aims was to examine how something can be more than the sum of it's parts and can be 3 in 1: synergy, fusion, co-operation, The Trinity.

Does anyone know of a similar form? Have I re-invented the wheel?

If there are any thoughts please comment on my post here, in the forum or at my blog, this would be much appreciated:
Cleave poem: The invention of a new poetic form?

Also: if anyone is up for it I would challenge you to write a cleave poem, and if you would allow I would like to publish them on my blog as early examples of this form.

Thanks
PT

Here are 2 of my cleave poems.

0000000000000000Cleave: Charm.

000000000000000000Don't let him charm you
don't listen to his promises his words like birds
0000000000scattering flies that flit from brow to lash,
000000ready for your flesh, stroking feather kisses on your lips
0he squawks in expectation humming in your ears,
0flapping inside your skull as he lies next to you.
00000000000000000Don't! Let him charm you!

100011The thief brings darkness, she waits
0000he brings the sun for her love
0held beneath his arm her heart
the light of day blazes bright

000000000he is united aching
0000000with his lover now sightless
00000000he holds her blind from the sun

It's a great idea. I have never seen it before (although I know something similar exists in prose as a sort of language game), but it seems like such a brilliantly simple idea that I can hardly believe it hasn't been done before. If not, I think you deserve to become famous for inventing it, for it's brilliant.
Desireable?

To create a new poetic form? I wouls say it was almost necessary considering all other forms are ignored or frowned upon as being 'old hat.'
A very interesting form and challenge, I hope this receives the attention that it deserves.
Really like the opposing advice in your first.
Cheers

Wow. I understand now after visiting KGT's poem. It's wonderful. Maybe you will become famous for this as FM says! I hope more people will try this intriguing form.
