English Slacker chapter fifty-one

This is the final chapter from section VI

So we’d come across Graz and some of his other mates after a while and we were dancing with them. The Rabbit song was playing and we were all doing sarcastic dancing, like pretending we were really into it and that and it was well funny.

Anyway, that was when Holly and her mates suddenly came up to us and then we were all dancing together. And before too long me and Holly had got closer and closer and all of a sudden we were kissing; just out of nowhere.

It felt well good: We kissed for fucking ages. And it was only a matter of time before my hands were on her arse.

A couple of times I thought about what the hell we were gonna do once we stopped and thought about if I was gonna have to buy her a drink (‘cause I didn’t have enough money left) but most of the time I remember thinking about how fucking cool it was to be relaxing into a passionate kiss.

It’s all a bit of a blur but basically we never made it to the bar and were still on the dance floor – like, hugging and that; totally wasted – when the lights came on (we were alone by then actually; no idea how long we’d been there).

Holly said she had to go and get her coat and I went with her. As I was waiting I took the chance to see if I could spot anyone around and remember seeing Graz leaving with Jo and he was winking at me but didn’t come up to talk or anything. And I scanned the club for Neale to see if he was okay or what he was doing but couldn’t spot him anywhere.

Holly came back with her coat and her hat was on again and she was looking pretty cute. Yeah I can still picture her standing there now, looking up at me with big eyes and that, most of her hair back under her hat. And there was I feeling like a proper man, putting my arm around her shoulder and leading us out towards the exit.

Outside it was pretty crowded. Some lads arguing with a couple of bouncers to our left, another bouncer at the gate encouraging people to get the fuck home, everyone just sort of loitering about, some sitting down talking and smoking, some standing around saying goodbye’s or planning what to do next.

Holly said, “So where have all your friends gone?” and I said, “I think they’ve all left me,” and when she said, “Why?” I said, “I think they knew to,” but she didn’t say anything back and looked a bit confused: I remember that I just really wanted to kiss her again then, but it was weird with the sudden like, lack of music and artificial lighting; everything was real again.

I said, “So where are all your friends?” and she said, “I think my friends have gone too,” and I said, “Cool,” and laughed; then wondered if that was really the best response.

I saw Bradby then, and the angel he’d been with before. They were getting off by the hedge and I was gonna ignore them but Holly saw me looking and said, “Isn’t that your friend?” and I said, “Yeah,” and then I was suddenly shouting out, “Bradby!” and wondering why the hell I’d done that.

It was all right though ‘cause Bradby said something to the girl and then came up to us smiling and like, “All right guys?” asking me what I’d been up to.

Holly actually found this quite funny, like as I looked at her and then quickly back to Bradby, thinking about how exactly to answer that question.

Bradby then asked me, “What are you up to now?” and I said, “I dunno, what are you up to?” and Holly laughed again; this time I wasn’t sure why; she was kinda swaying a bit and holding on to me for support.

Bradby looked at her and then back at me and said that he was probably just gonna go home and that but, “Apparently there’s something going on down the park,” and then, when I waited for him to like elaborate or whatever he said, “At least, some people are going down there,” and then asked me I’d seen Neale yet ‘cause apparently he was looking for me.

I said that I didn’t have a clue where Neale was and then, “When was the last time you saw him?” and Bradby was looking around saying, “He was here somewhere.”

Holly then said, “So who are you then?” to Bradby and Bradby was like, “Bradby,” and, “How’ ya doing?” and suddenly Holly and Bradby were going into all this small talk bullshit.

As they chatted I looked around me. The crowd was starting to thin out, taxis were filling up. Neale was nowhere to be seen: I wondered if he’d gone up the park, and if Alex and Paul had actually managed to make a bomb yet. Although when I looked back at Holly and Bradby talking I realised I wasn’t really that much in the mood to find out; I just wanted to kiss her again.

Then the angel suddenly appeared, looking pretty fit, taking Bradby’s hand and saying, “I’m Isabel,” and for some reason started to shake Holly’s hand.

Bradby then looked at us both and smiled again and said, “See you guys later,” and put his arm around Isobel and then everyone was saying, “See ya,” and they were walking off leaving us still standing there, two of the few people still remaining.

I didn’t really know what to do then. I asked Holly if she wanted to come down the park with me but she said, “No,” and that she wanted to go home.

And I thought that was it but as she started to leave she said, “Aren’t you coming then?”

So he didn't lose Holly. I love your descriptions of Chambers's gauchness. They are very real.

How's he going to feel when he meets her on the checkour at Pricesavers tomorrow morning, though? I do hope that's coming next.
