One careless boast
By Fledermaus
07 September 2008

Why did you mock her Gudrun?

You showed her the ring and belt,

Led your kingdom to ruin.

Many a cruel blow was dealt.

You could have known Brynhild's choice,

No vengeance like a woman's.

Listen to her wrathful voice.

Sigurd did not stand a chance.

One careless boast caused despair,

Deception, boasting and lies,

Destruction, beyond repair,

Murder, ambush, battle-cries.

Nibelungenlied and the Volsunga?
Written by Phil (6963 comments posted) 8th September 2008
I'm assuming that's what inspired this. I've not read up on it yet - promise I will. It reads almost like a story synopsis - but without the necessary knowledge - I may be completely wrong.

What a useless review. Sorry!

Thanks Phil.
Indeed that's the story. An interesting thing is that the boast itself seems to differ on some points in the Nibelungenlied and the Volsunga saga. What Wagner did with it I don't know, but reading the story I doubt if any opera could beat the ancient versions.

Fledermaus - You need to give us our homework the week before so that we can read up on what you have written. Better than that - come and write about the story in the children's section first so that we can learn and appreciate. Must do some reading.

Yes, with Josie, I need some pointers to understand where this is coming from. In my ignorance I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of the Nibelungenlied and the Volsunga saga, and Wagner is way beyond me!

Cheers!

Thanks Josie and John,
Surely you mustb have heard of Wagner's operas? They're (rather poor) adaptations of this myth. Not only is it a great story, but moreover it's interesting that it came in a Continental (semi-Christian) and an Icelandic (Viking, pagan) version.
Gudrun is the Icelandic version of Kriemhild, Brynhild of Bruenhild (Brunhilde in Wagner's version) and Sigurd is Siegfried.
