Apocalypse Blues
Up boys and atom, let the flying protons collide;
Up boys and atom, we're in for a light speed ride;
We'll have a smashing time of it till we hit the downward slide.
Quarks and anti-quarks we know,
mesons, pions all in row,
photons are old hat.
Here around the Hadron there's one thing that we lack:
knowing if this will result at last in a hole that's big and black,
But we'll have a smashing time of it as we take the unknown track.
Baryons, bosons in we'll throw,
watch the screens begin to glow
(and maybe Schroedinger's cat ).
So up boys and atom, let's all join in the fun,
aim that big accelerator, it's just another gun
enough to smash the universe before we're good and done .

Wizz for Atomms! Written by ainsel (68 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | This is a fun piece - I'm hearing it as a song, sung by Johnny Cash (which is unfortunate, as he's left the business, permanently ) If the End really is Nigh, let's have some fun, shall we? | What kind... Written by patterjack (1435 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | ... of fun did you have in mind , ainsel ? Snigger Snigger I was trying in a way to copy an old blues song -- one of the many and varied styles of blues . Thanks for the review. patterjack | Written by grace (173 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | Clever patterjack, very clever! Pamx | Written by Phil (7169 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | Did you start with 'Up boys and atom'? Clever little refrain. Enjoyed it. It has that flavour of many a song of this type - it starts a narrative, but doesn't really focus - more plays with the words and ideas than telling the story fully. Successful, I'd say. Phil | Anyone, Grace, Written by patterjack (1435 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | ... can collect a few technical terms and tack them together . I did that -- so I hope nobody asks what they mean ! thanks for the review patterjack | Yes Phil Written by patterjack (1435 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | I began with a reference to two things-- Wellington's exhortation at Waterloo , and Joyce's version of it which sticks with me irrelevantly and irreverently -- Up Jock and hockem . I went on from there -- not altogether in fun. Not sure whether the full story can in fact be told as yet. Thanks for the comment patterjack

I was rather disappointed at the anticlimax with the CERN particle accelerator. I thought perhaps it was going to create some wormhole and open up the pathway to a parallel universe or something. Mia | Apocalypses Written by patterjack (1435 comments posted) 11th September 2008 | (If there is a plural for that word !!!! One should be enough .) Not this time fortunately . Let's wait for Elijah to forewarn us . And like you Mia , I would prefer the idea of a wormhole leading to another universe rather than the all engulfing Black Hole leading nowhere. The verse is just a bit of fun-- keeping my hand in -- you might say-- but not in a Black Hole I hope! patterjack

Nice idea that physicists should sing as they haul their magnets. wonder if the Higgs boson supervises thair work. This has really got to you, PJ, I like you being topical sometimes rather than classical. "Up boys and atom".... groan... | classically topical Written by patterjack (1435 comments posted) 13th September 2008 | and a sea shanty to boot ! Blimey ! Nah , V , the Collider did not get to me really-- it just happened to be a fun subject -- and after all , despite your groans , what have we done to the atom lately ? But I am pessimistic enough to think that somehow some sod somewhere will make a weapon of it . patterjack |
