View From Brixton Gaol

Been away for a while, doing some writing. Glad ot see the community is still thriving. Looking forward to reading some great new stuff.

This is a poem I've written since moving to Brixton, all thoughts much appreciated...!

View from Brixton Gaol

People sheltering in doorways away from grey coloured scaffold skies
A momentary respite from those too near turbulent times
Bleak houses cry gently against those grey coloured winds
As the scaffold skies close in, and the Brixton Prison blues set in

A woman wanders down the hill one of these cool dark lonely days
A black shawl near strangles her neck as she makes for far away
Those bleak houses have stood the long sad test of time
The shadow cast by the gaol falls further than those on the inside

And the next generation wander carelessly free on the ironic path outside
A sadness hangs over the area that has lost its sense of pride
Cheery eyed newcomers soon doubt the way they think
As the scaffold skies close in, and the Brixton Prison blue set in

Was the move to Brixton voluntary? I just asked given the nature of the poem. I noted the repeated phrases but wasn't sure what to make of them, thought there definitely was a bleak, dispirited feel to the work.I get the feeling that you are saying there is not much difference between the inside of Brixton Prison and the outside. Is the irony that you might just as well be inside as out,
Not sure I understood it but it did have some affect on me.
cheers
