Lost Again
By faye
26 January 2006

again, i'm not classing this as conventional poetry, just a short piece of prose that i have been working on....

finally, i could hear the voice at the other end, after years of trying and only getting the engaged signal.

the line was faint, for quite a while i wasn't sure if i had got through. without even realising it, i had made a connection

as time went bythings started to improve. the air was electric; excitement, apprehension, that brief encounter had helped no end.

i could just make out a whisper "don't go there, be strong" then the line went dead. "hello, hello" nobody's there, all i'm hearing is the monotonous drone of a disconnection.

the fact that it was over didn't sink in straight away. i had always choked on the black; silly to think this time would be any different.

i never got the chance to ask anymore questions.

now i'm lost again.

i think if you cut the words down in this piece and changed the lines, you'd have something really powerful. maybe expand it a little into the fictional? cause right now it seems definitely to be from experience

just a few suggestions, don't remove this one from the site if you decide to change it, just republish under a different name, because this owrks on it's own.

Agreeing in general with the above, it "almost" has a poetic cadence to it: some careful editing could quite possibly give it a distinct poetic rhythm.
The content is lyrical, and worthy of a poetry framework - I don't think of myself as iclined towards poetry so I'm not the one to advise you! :grin

Thank you both for your comments & suggestions, i will carry on working with this and hopefully be able to re-write a better piece.

I like it. I hope I don't sound flippant but you know what it made me think of? Those times I tried to phone Swap Shop or whatever to speak to some pop star or other and never quite got through. I think sometimes knowing I wouldn't get through was the only reason for phoning. The thought of asking a question for real....!
