I took the liberty of e-mailing Oxfam, informing them of our competition. They have sent me this reply to share with you. Pretty impressed: the response came within twelve hours of me mailing them. Phil Oxfam House John Smith Drive Oxford OX4 2JY
To members of the Great Writing Online Community
Thank you very much for your generous support of Oxfam – we were so pleased that competition entries on Great Writing were donated to Oxfam! With the commitment of people like you, we are able to continue to provide a better future for people living in poverty.
As experts in emergency response, we know what a huge difference gifts like yours can make during a crisis situation. We are able to respond as soon as a disaster happens, providing lifesaving hygiene equipment and access to clean water.
Renewed violence has forced more than 200,000 people to flee their homes in eastern DRC since August 2008. Living in makeshift shelters, many face a severe lack of safe drinking water, which poses both health and security dangers to all concerned.
Thanks to donations like yours, we can provide emergency assistance to people in four camps in eastern DRC, by supplying clean water and sanitation. Your donation will also help us to scale up this response to help over 200,000 people in total, including people living in the camps or sheltering outside Goma in woodland. We are also supporting households outside the town who are hosting displaced family members.
Oxfam’s work doesn’t stop at responding to disasters and conflict situations. We are tackling the causes of poverty head on by helping people to find long-term solutions to the problems they face. We are also campaigning to governments and international organisations to change the rules that keep people in poverty. We are, for example, calling for tighter control of the arms trade, a change to unfair trade, and health and education for all.
