MIRIAM

My name is Miriam, if you care to look

You won't find my name in God's holy book

But if you read it with care

There's a passage there

That any mother cannot overlook.

I was so excited to tell him that we

Were having a baby, we would become three.

A few months to wait

Until my due date

It would be the happiest day for me.

When that day arrived ‘twas a small baby boy.

I cannot express my feeling of joy,

As I looked at his face,

At his beautiful face,

A whole life ahead to enjoy.

Then one day as he played near the door

With a bowl and stick on the floor

Before I could cry out

A soldier did shout

‘I thought we'd finished, here is one more".

Right there before me, in a heap on the floor

Everything I had ever lived for.

My son was dead

Because Herod had said

‘Kill them all under two, it's the law'.

I cried and I wept,

For days I just kept

To my bed and I would not eat.

My baby was dead

Because Herod had said

There was a new king that he must defeat.

For what reason my son

Gave his life so that one

Other could escape and go free.

I would much rather

Have been my son's mother

And that he was still here with me.

But many years later I met with this King

He held my hand and told me everything.

He said that my baby

Is waiting for me

And together His praises we'll sing.

...and that king's mother's name was Miriam too, although later Latinized to Maria...

The rythm of this poem could have been better, but the content is interesting. How many people would have actually embraced Jezus because of the tyranny of Herod? A very intersting thought.
