Dancing in the Dark
By CharlieHere

I saw Springsteen singing Dancing in the Dark from 1984 and realised that my brother had modelled his dancing style on the way the Boss dances in that video and I probably did as well, as did lots of men now in their 40's.  It's a good dance mind, works for just about every record, having one dance is essential I find.

The poem comes from then and now.

Back in nineteen eighty four
We were dancing in the dark
Not with Eric Arthur Blair
But with Springsteen in the park

And you, my love, were beautiful
I promised you the moon,
But down it fell, we crashed, we burned,
We lost it all too soon.

You blamed Arthur Scargill
For killing what was good
The miners strike divided us
Though Springsteen understood

That Thatcher played a canny hand
MacGregor played it too
The stockpiled coal, a summer strike
To lose would never do

How could you turn your face
From the anger and the shame
That Orgreave bought upon this land
Then shout ‘She’s not to blame!’

That was all our history until
There you were, having tea
Twenty years on, give or take,
In two thousand and three

We laughed, we two, about
The silliness of our youth
And oh how strange, I apologized
For being so uncouth.

You just smiled, held my hand
And told me not to worry
‘I forgive if you forgive
And let’s have no more sorry.’

hi there,
I really enjoyed this piece. I'm not one for too much rhyming however this had a very light and playful touch to it...which is great and the final two verses are very eloquently put. Good strong images and a sweet rhyming scheme.
I think it could work as a song...maybe send it off to springsteen? ha

Thanks Eileen - I'm glad you put aside your antipathy to rhyming in order to enjoy it. It is a bit dum de dum dum de dum - if you see what I mean. Perhaps a song? I'll tune up my ukulele right away.

Dancing in the Dark was one song I could never dance to. Must see if I can find a video of how Springsteen did it. A nice lead in to those very poignant reminiscences - the miners' strike was a very divisive time.

I liked the gentle dancing style to your poem, and the way that the words danced on the page. I think the style was quite apt for such a poem for if you are writing about dancing, and dancing with a beat, what other way is there to do it? Very good.
