Had to 'do' Eliot at school - hence the bitterness. His 'Four Quartets' always mystified me - I thought 'Burnt Norton' must be a eulogy to a motorbike.
Did he earn money from 'The Wasteland' in his lifetime? Dunno - I may have been unfair? Anyway, just reflecting on how having poetry rammed down one's throats for exams can ruin it forever . . . I actually love Eliott, especially 'Prufrock'.
Cheers!
Happy springtime - John X
Wasted April Fool
The greatest April fool of all
was Eliot, when he said
that 'April is the cruellest month' -
was he off his head?
His intellectual 'Wasteland' thing
is beyond the feeble powers
of my poor simple understanding,
that celebrates spring flowers.
Oh yes, the crusifixion must
bring tears to the eye,
but celebrating human dust?
Why, I ask you, why?
The wanderings through his famous 'Wasteland'
have brought cold joy to many,
while royalties went to expand his waistband,
I wouldn't pay a penny
for all his A-leveled quaint allusions
that kept me up all night
revising Donne et al confusions -
'Are my references right?'
No, Eliot can go to hell for me -
Yeats is more my man,
I wish him well with his Maud Gonne,
a wasted faerie in Ireland.
