Growing Up

Underneath the covers
Waiting for my Mum
She’s the one that reads my story,
She’s the only one.

Dad’s face appears around the door
‘Let’s choose a book together,
I’d like to read to you tonight,
It would be my pleasure.’

Underneath the covers
Waiting for my Mum
She’s the one that reads my story,
She’s the only one.

‘What about “The Gruffalo?”
That one looks like fun,
Mummy always told me
That was your favourite one.’

Underneath the covers
Waiting for my Mum
She’s the one that reads my story,
She’s the only one.

‘Mummy’s gone, sweetheart
We’ve been though this before
She’s gone to live in heaven now
And won’t be back any more.’

Underneath the covers
Dad I’ll be alright
I think perhaps I don’t need
Story time tonight.

Of course this is meant to be a very sad poem - and it is - and it is strange how many children say that their mothers read their bedtime stories and poems. This father points out that mother told him which was the favourite story. For me the poem is very good, but alright is two words. It is the only all ----- which is two words. already, also, always but all right. I thought you wrote this very well, and the recurring theme brought home the sadness.
I like it

The way in which you've structured this poem really ensures it comes across in the most powerful way. The only thing was that I cringed at the 'heaven' line although I've no idea what could be put there instead. Altogether well executed though.
