8) Okay, folks! Since I stuck my neck out and made a suggestion, I guess I'd better start the ball rolling! This is very short (175 words) but it has the "feel" of a short end-of-the-news "tag" which might possibly fool one or two people ..... April
“A possible instance of avian flu was being investigated today at a coastal farm twelve miles west of Dover ” The newsreader’s voice was calm and professional. He continued: The farmer, Mr, Jonathan Archer, said he had been prepared for the possibility of infections, and had taken a number of precautions on his own initiative. “I talked to a local supplier, and arranged to have him deliver two hundred custom-made hot water bottles of suitable size to install under the nests where my chickens roost at night,” he explained. “It means that I have to get the kids to help me fill all the bottles each evening, and help me tuck the chickens in, but they seem to enjoy it and I think the birds appreciate being made a fuss of, too.” Together with special lightbulbs which are designed to produce heat and low-level illumination in equal measure, the interior of Mr. Archer’s barn has been transformed into a warm, cosy place. So far there hasn’t been a single sneeze or snuffle from any of the hens. |

I presume the implication was that the farmer and his family spent so much time fussing over the chickens that they were the ones who caught flu, not the birds... but I think you might have been trying to make the point a little too subtly. Good on you for being the first Lazy Writer to get their homework in, though! Better get cracking with mine... | Written by Bottleblondesurfer (3362 comments posted) 17th March 2006 | | A sharp and witty piece And it made me think that perhaps why don't we try a bit more to save the birds instead of just chucking them onto big fire, maybe that wasn't your intention but it shows what a good piece of writing can do. | Funny and spot-on Written by Leigh (226 comments posted) 22nd March 2006 | I love it! This is precisely the sort of story the tabloids love to get us going with on 1st April (wouldn't be surprised if we see something of this ilk this year - I've heard quite a few bird flu jokes). I agree with the above reviewer that perhaps you're a bit too subtle in implying that the farmers are the bird flu victims - it would work better, to me, if you simply come out and say this, perhaps at the end. | Written by brook_rivers (484 comments posted) 24th March 2006 | liked the idea of an end of news tag - and have to confess have nicked this idea for my own homework! hope you dont mind and hope i dont get told off!!! | Bagheera!
