It struck me as I queued (does anyone actually know how to spell that word?) up to watch my sandwich being made, that the whole process is a little explicit for my tastes. It should be re-assuring to watch your sandwich being made up before your ravenous eyes. But as I wiped the drool from my lower chin I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable.
In the throes of heady expectation I was first hoodwinked into believing I was in control - actually choosing my own fillings! In fact I unwittingly became a miniscule cog in some colossal machine, a fact I can more easily avoid in other fast food places if not deny. In subway you actually shuffle along in tandem with your sandwich. Its such an absurd scene but perfectly illustrates the grotesque conveyor belt that we have reduced the simple necessity of eating to. Product and consumer move as one, the latter stripped of their wits, becomes transfixed, suddenly unable to communicate save for sanctioning grunts and nods which serve as the only language in this dystopia. By the time I reached the till having side stepped in a crab like fashion, I was conditioned to accept any amount of cash the sales assistant asked for - and frankly would not have complained if they wrapped me up and put a bag over my head as well (an action that would not be wasted on said sales assistant). Emerging slowly from the anaesthetising effects of the queue I underook the final insult in full comprehension my violation - I had to get my own drink! The only thing that remained was to walk out eyes down and devour my catch in a primitive fashion in front of my desk while writing a horrendously long email about the whole experience.
Its depressing to contemplate how the civilised dignity of the hunter gatherer homo-sapien, has ‘evolved’ into this, and even more depressing to be unable to deny my own part in it.

Do you want fries? Written by Bottleblondesurfer (3445 comments posted) 21st March 2006 | | An interesting if depressing piece Yes, I suppose it has come to that, but you do have the choice not to go in to these places and you will not go hungry. There is even less dignity in starvation and that is something that will never trouble most of us. |
