Blurred Line- A Letter to Society
By piperlawrence
18 March 2006
this is a letter to society in general after i read an old book mentioning the two world wars. its basically just saying that we've got to remember that there is bigger things than our celebrities and television shows out there. that people all over the world are dying, and have died. The sole purpose of this letter is not to critisise or reproach, as it may seem to in some paragraphs or even all of them. The purpose is to get people thinking, and if they do that, even if they think this letter is absoloute crap, than I'll be happier than if the prime minister and the whole country said it was a well written letter, but was meaningless to them.

BLURRED LINE 9/2/06

I seldom think to myself of the horrors that have happened and still happen. When I open up a book and read about characters who went to a war nearly a century ago, I still feel so much. The war fields still hold the scars of a battles that slaughters dreams, and families, battles that are so horrifying I don’t know how anyone could have even had the merest idea or thought to command a thousand troops or more to go into a valley of death when most will await their death sentence.

Then I wonder how and if things have really improved from the beginning of modern warfare. Have they become ‘better’ or ‘worse’? Or does it depend which side your on? Or do you mourn the loss of life itself? Whether they’re from the same country, or have the same opinions? Then I remember that there’s a war happening right now. It’s mentioned on the news, it’s on there all the time.

But seriously how many people actually think at least once about all the bad stuff, major or small, that’s happening on the other side of the world. Do I? Not really, not most of the time anyway. When I think about it now I really do take step back and realise that what celebrities are doing isn’t bad so much as us only caring about what they’re wearing, or what’s happening to characters we don’t even know.

There’s a blurred line between good or bad, what’s right and what’s wrong. But now that I really look, where’s the blur when you care more about what happens to someone make believe when people who are real and breathing on this earth are dying? That’s something I think we need to look at.

But the major point of this letter is a reflection. It's easy to have an opinion, but what's a hell of a lot harder is to live up to it.

A Letter to Society----I suppose that includes me- though sometimes I'm not sure. So I feel I should respond. It is a powerful and cogent piece and raises a lot of uncomfortable questions. I am baffled by this obsession with celebrity and even more when they are only famous for being famous- it's so vacuous.
It is difficult to cope with all killing in the world --I hear another 36 Iraqis died today and then we move onto Anne Diamonds tummy strap!! I mean that's 36 tragedies how do you take it in--you can't so you invent umimportant things to care about and celebrity provides it.It's the new obsession; even politics now is just showbusiness for ugly people. The irony is the very people who will be cannon fodder in the war are the ones who are so fixated with these pointless celebrities and so will end being the statistics that the others won't want to know about (sorry if that's confusing!!!)
Well, piperlawrence you certainly got me all steamed up your'e a powerful writer.
I don't believe it.....

Miss Bluebottle is far too kind. God bless her. The woman is a saint.
Sadly not so myself. For your own good as a suppopsed writer [sic] as opposed to a professional evangelical gobshytye let me give you a piece of advice. Your soapbox effort? Drivel ! Absolute drivel! If you want people to take notice of what you say, stop preaching and try writing. Someone might, just might, listen. You also might find you are a competent writer.

My regards to you.

There's an awful lot of postulation in what must be less than 300 words, and to what end? I'd be intetrested in your own opinions, rather than this (seeming) interminable rhetoric.

Keep writing, but lower your sights a tad.
