Detention 1952

I could never obey the rules at school!

You know what the rules are.

Girls who have the privilege

of attending this school

must obey them.

A beret or velour hat

must be worn outdoors

or a straw hat in summer.

There are no exceptions.

(Who snitched on me?)

Too hot?Nonsense.

An English summer day

has never prevented

young ladies from behaving

with propriety.

(Sucks to you!)

You will stay for one hour

detention on Thursday.

Please explain to your parents.

I am sure they will agree

that your behaviour

leaves much to be desired.

(I doubt it!)

Don’t let it happen again.

(Blah! Blah!)

It's always fun to be the rebel.

Rules are for the guidance of the wise and the obedience of fools

Great poem. It has a good rhythm and gives a little more insight into one of those alien British things...
