e-memo to me
By Bagheera
04 April 2006
On the Great Writing HNome Page at the moment there's a link to a site where you're asked to imagine sending an e-mail to yourself from the future ........

Notice the date when I originally wrote this, which is genuine. I "tewaked" it a bit last night (Mon 3 April) before deciding I would post it on the site.

This morning I woke up to Prof. Turner on BBC News 24 announcing the latest decisions about Pensions Reform - is that spooky, or what!!!!?

e-mote note

sent items         30.03.2006 @ 20:00                to:        me@then.com

If I’ve got this right, I’m due to retire in about three months from now.

All else being equal, I’m expecting to receive this e-mail from me and I’ll know what to do when I get it.

It’s quite simple, really, and as far as I can see it should be foolproof.

All I have to do is Google “National Lottery results” for 01 April 2006.

Write the 6 numbers (plus Bonus number) at the end of this e-mail and hit the “Reply” button ....................

Thank me!

Date:                Sunday 30 March 2036

Reply               The numbers were as follows

                        9    17    18    21    23    39    Bonus  45

Before I go out and place the numbers, however, there’s a problem.

Early in the morning of Saturday 1 April 2006 a number of the National Lottery’s senior management were arrested and charged with a number of fraud offences. In order to maximise the weekly stake income, it was decided to continue selling tickets throughout the day.

The network was turned off immediately after the draw, at 20:15 that evening. Some late-night traders were asked to redeem £10 for 3 correct numbers the same evening, but were unable to access the network All ticket holders were advised that the system had ‘crashed’ and they should try again the following day.

By Sunday morning the story had broken and there were angry scenes at many newsagents. In Manchester, Birmingham and several places in London the police were employed to restore order in the streets.

It became clear that there had been widespread corruption at the highest of levels throughout the National Lottery’s history. This was the main reason for less than 25% of Lottery stakes filtering through to winning ticket holders and/or beneficiary “Good Causes”.

Some of the biggest ‘players’ involved had been tipped off that the net was closing on them and had skipped the country, living off their Swiss and offshore bank accounts.

The National Lottery debâcle collapsed overnight and was never resurrected. The “Get Rick Quick” mentality of the ‘Something for Nothing’ generation was replaced by a genuine and sustained traditional work ethic. As a result of this, I have to inform me that I have the privilege of working on until I drop. Chancellor John (Two Troughs) Prescott scrapped the State Pension in 2015 during Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s second term of office, describing it as an “expensive and unsustainable luxury”.

I can only suggest that I take this opportunity to escape Stalag Luft Britain while the going’s good. When they closed the borders (Jan 2011) in an attempt to limit immigration, they effectively made it just as difficult for anyone wishing to leave the country.

However, since I’m sitting here (still in the UK) writing to me, I can only assume that I didn’t (or was unable to) take my advice to me ..............

Mine in Sorrow

Very imaginitive

I think this is quite witty, though a little far fetched. I mean, do you really think you'll still be allowed to speak English in this country 30 years from now?

ONLY - JOKING!

Well done. You better watch Back To The Future II before attempting a stunt like this though!
51st state

My sage with the crystal ball says we become the 51st state of America on April 1st 2014 and the new President is one Monica Lewinski. On 13th May 2014 she orders American troops into Britain and with the help of Nato troops they scour The Diana memorial for weapons of mass destruction. Tony Blair flees the country in Sir Alan Sugar`s Yacht but Pressa is too slow and dies a long, lingering death shackled to Tessa Jowell in the tower of London. Ainsley Harriot is installed as a puppet leader and the royal family are exiled to the Isle of Dogs....

liked your piece. That is one thing about writing the future...anything goes!

If JK Rowling can do it....

Hi Bags,
Sorry to have missed this; but I have been busy. Well done, as usual.
Also I picked up your mention of getting published or being introduced to an agent . Best of luck and if I can be of any help just give me a shout. I have an agent but it's a double edeged sword. Think before you drink before you drive, as they say.

I promise I'll get round to The Chapel of Her Dreams asap, but remember what I said, The Rocking Horse musical is still my favourite. Super conception and execution. Show that to the agent first.

Slainte!
