Smells and Bells

Weirdly, I was asked to write a poem about 'bad smells' . . . .

Here's a first draft - all comments welcome!

Cheers! John

Smells and Bells

The Catholic church has much to answer for.
Hypocrisy, for one, but incense candles
annoy me not a little, in fact more
than careless shit that's left upon door handles
of public loos. The cat-shit's acid stink
that all-pervades many a right-on house
has nothing on this sweet stench, I think.
Am I a man, or some religious mouse?
God sod it all. A whiff of immortality
passes by me as I write this sonnet.
Let's get a grip on pungent, hot reality.
Please remove your sweaty, soiled bonnet.
All these, and more, get up my delicate nose.
          I couldn't sniff your armpit, I suppose?

Odd. And a bit disturbing. I've seen web sites about this sort of thing, though not sure why you've dragged the catholic church into it, no more pungent than any other religion I would have thought.

Really not sure about this one, sorry.

Not sure about this one, doesn't seem to flow off the tongue as easily as the most of your work does. I found myself tripping over some of the lines, using shit in two consecutive lines broke the rhythm for example, well for me anyway. That said I liked the concept very much, but there is barely concealed deep emotion in this which I think is getting in the way? But then I'm not Catholic

Cheers
