By brook_rivers
13 April 2006

I would like to know iwhat scenes you like/dont like and if its worth sending in as a sample of my script writing style?

also I have formatted the script to initate a real one but if there are any technical points iv missed please let me know! Also i did have this all double spaced but for some reason it hasn't appeared like that when i pasted it in so please bear with that!!! happy reading Cool

Scene in the market, Martin’s Stall. Ext. Day Light. 8.30

[Bert and Joe approach Martin who is moving boxes of bananas about and organising the stall]

Bert: [cheerfully] You all right son? Coming for a drink at lunch?

Martin: [Moodily] I don’t know

Bert: Come on, got to keep your chin up lad, get on with your life.

Martin: maybe…

[Bert walks away, Joe stops before following him]

Joe: He’s right you know Martin time to move on.

[Martin briefly nods his head. Joe follows Bert. Martin turns to serve a customer]

Ian’s house, in the kitchen. Int. Day light. 9.00

[Ian is washing up at the sink he has his back to the rest of the kitchen and doesn’t hear Jane. Jane comes into the kitchen sighs and then takes a deep breath before talking to Ian]

Jane: [In a stern voice] Ian you know this isn’t the way to handle things….

[Ian starts as if he has been disturbed from deep a thought; he turns round to face Jane with a bowl in his hand]

Ian: Morning. Sorry what was that?

Jane: Phil…

Ian: Like I said yesterday some people are not fit to be fathers, and Phil Mitchell is definitely one of them. I can’t stand the thought of him being anywhere near Ben…..

Jane: Ian, you can not involve Ben in this feud you have with Phil, it’s not fair on him!

[Ian looks very annoyed and starts to reply]

Jane: No Ian I mean it. No stupid games now, this isn’t about the garage or the café now, this is about a child, this is about Ben. And if you ask me Peggy is the key to solving all this. We’ve made the peace with her, we’ve just got to keep that going and maybe she can have some sort of influence over Phil.

[Ian bangs a bowl he has just washed down on the side and turns to finish the washing up]

Ian: Look Jane I’ll deal with this how I see best

[Jane raises her eyes in frustration]

Upstairs in the Vic, Back room. Int. Day Light. 9.30

[In the smallest upstairs room of the Vic. Honey is wandering around as if taking mental measurements while Billy is leaning against the window]

Honey: I can’t believe Peggy’s given us this room for the nursery. It’s so generous of her.

Billy: Yeah well Peggy’s like that ain’t she. A true diamond.

Honey: Yeah she is. Anyway we are going to have to start getting this place ready for the baby!

Billy: What? It’s a bit early isn’t it?

Honey: No! We need to be well prepared before the baby is born. We need to sort out colour schemes and everything. Dads made us the cot and we need to get….

Billy: hang on a sec! Colour schemes well we don’t even know if it’s a boy or a girl yet. We can’t start painting till we know that.

Honey: Well I don’t want to know, I want it to be a surprise, don’t you Billy?

Billy [smiles] Yeah you’re right it should be a surprise. But what colour are we going paint the room then?

Honey: Well we will have to have neutral colours, white’s and lemons and that.

Billy: You know what Honey you’re going to make a great mum.

Honey: and you’re going to be the best dad ever Billy

[Billy moves towards Honey and gives her a kiss; they are both clearly very happy]

Café. Int. Day light. 9.30

[It’s fairly busy at the café. Ian and Juley are both behind the counter. Keith and Mickey are being served. Charlie and Mo are sat at a table near the door both with cups of tea. Dot and Jim are on the table next to them, Jim is absorbed in his paper. There are a few other extras sitting at the other tables]

Charlie: I’m still really worried about Freddie you know; I think little Mo is becoming too reliant on that medicine.

Mo: Yeah & after all that bother she gave me about given it too him in the first place!

Charlie: She’s just trying to do her best. I just wish she’d let us help her out a bit more.

Mo: Well she’s too stubborn isn’t she, just like her mum she is. Don’t worry though Charlie she’ll find her feet.

Charlie: You’re right Mo, she’ll get through it - its just tough while little Freddie is still teething. Any way I better go, I’ve got a job to go to.

[They get up to leave. Cuts to dot and Jim who were sitting on the next table]

Dot: You see that little Mo has been drugging her baby.

Jim: Be quiet Dorothy, you’re over reacting. You heard what Charlie said the baby’s teething that’s all!

Dot: hmmm well I don’t like the sound of it.

[Dot lights up a cigarette while Jim sighs and goes back to his paper]

Vic. Down stairs. Int. Day light. 10.30

[Working behind the bar is Dawn and Honey. Doctor Oliver enters the pub and goes to the bar. Honey is serving at the far end of the bar so Dawn comes over to serve him]

Dawn: [usual confidence] Hello Doctor, what can I get you today?

Doctor Oliver: Just an orange juice please Dawn.

[The doctor is being polite but it is clear he wants to get away from Dawn quickly]

Dawn: Having a good day?

Doctor: [Abrupt] Yes thank you.

[Stacey & Deano walk into the bar and wait for Dawn as Honey is still busy]

Dawn: I was thinking maybe we could go for a drink or something; I still haven’t really apologized for my behaviour the other week. [Flashes a smile as she passes over his drink]

Doctor Oliver: That’s ok don’t worry about it. [Starts to turn away]

Dawn: [Dawn sounds a bit more urgent now] No, no it’s my treat, how about tonight when I’ve finished my shift?

Doctor Oliver: Really Dawn its fine, no need to apologise, just forget about it.

[Doctor Oliver goes and sits down with his drink and his paper]

Stacey: Looks like your not going to be getting a date with the doctor eh dawn? Shame, he looks like one of the only half decent blokes round here.

Deano: Along with Bradley eh Stacey [chuckles & Stacey looks annoyed]

Dawn: Yes well thanks you two, what exactly is it you want?

Deano: hmm what do I want, well as your plans with the doctor haven’t worked out you may as well spend the night with me?

Dawn: How many times have I told you Deano? No.

[Dawn finishes serving Stacey & Deano. The bar is now quiet. She goes to speak to Honey and Peggy]

Dawn: The one man round here that has potential & he’s not interested! Then I have the likes of Deano pestering me all day!

Honey: Well Deano seems like a nice boy, he was fine when I was over at Pats

Dawn: Yes but Honey that’s exactly the problem, he’s a boy! Am I ever going to find a decent man round here?!

Honey: Course you will, you just need to be positive. Look how lucky I’ve been with my Billy!

Peggy: You’re being too choosy Dawn, you need to get yourself out there and have some fun!

[Jack walks past the bar and smiles at Peggy, Peggy smiles back. Martin walks in and Honey goes to serve him, Martin has come in for some change for the stall]

There’s lots of potential in Walford dawn. I mean take Martin over there, he’s single now, and you could do worse!

Dawn: [In a low voice] but Peggy I don’t want to be going out with a market trader! I want something more than that, something classier – like a doctor!

Peggy: Oh Dawn you’ll never get anywhere with an attitude like that. Take it from me, I appreciate the finer things in life too but you can’t help who you fall in love with [shoots a look at Jack who is now leaning on the end of the bar] and money and what job someone does isn’t everything you know.

[Dawn sighs]

Market. Ext. Day light. 11.00

Bradley: alright Stacey?

Stacey: [smiles] yeah I’m good thanks.

Bradley: glad to hear it, I just wondered if you wanted to go to the cinema tonight, you can choose.

Stacey: yeah why not.

Bradley: Okay then, I’ll pick you up at 7?

Stacey: Yeah sounds good.

Bradley: [smiles] okay then I’ll see you later.

Stacey: see ya. [Smiles to herself]

[Bradley turns and walks straight into Sonia]

Sonia: oh hi Bradley how are you?

Bradley: yeah couldn’t be better thanks. You…ah well….um

Sonia: well actually I wanted to see you coz I think you could help me out

Bradley: me? How?

Sonia: well I was wondering if you could have a word with granddad for me, you know about what’s happened?

[Bradley looks uncomfortable]

Bradley: well to be honest I wouldn’t really know what to say….

Sonia: Oh Bradley please, you’re my last hope! I’ve tried, Dot’s tried. All I want is for my own granddad to speak to me!

Bradley: Maybe you just need to give it some time?

Sonia: No, I can’t let it go on like this [looks as if about to cry]

Bradley: Okay, I’ll do my best but I’m not promising anything.

Sonia: Oh thanks Bradley, thank you so much.

[Sonia and Bradley walk off in different directions. The camera follows Sonia into the café]

Minty: Hi Ben, you okay?

[Before Ben can answer Ian cuts in]

Ian: Yes, he’s fine & he’d be a lot better if you Mitchell’s left him alone

[Jane has heard all this and looks outraged]

Jane: Ian!

Minty: Don’t worry Jane. But if you do change your mind Ian, Ben is always welcome to come and keep me company at the garage.

Jane: Thanks Minty

[Minty turns to leave the café and smiles goodbye to Ben, Ben smiles back]

Ian: [angrily] Jane who’s side are you here?!

Jane: I told you earlier, Ben’s!

[Jane goes back to working on the sandwiches with Ben, Ben looks slightly worried. Ian starts serving Sonia]

Pauline: That Bert is doing my head in Joe, he’s lazy, he eats all our food and it’s just inconvenient him being here what with all this going on with martin & Sonia. When is he leaving Joe, he said he’d only be here a few days!

Joe: I know, I know I’m sorry Pauline but he’s a mate I can hardly just turf him out can I?

Pauline: well I’m your wife Joe! And if you’re not careful he won’t be the only one being turfed out if you’re not careful.

[Joe gets up and follows Pauline into the kitchen]

Joe: Well what am I supposed to do Pauline?

[Pauline opens the back door]

Pauline: well he hasn’t taken any notice of my subtle hints so you’re going to have to have word with him aren’t you & sharpish I don’t want him cluttering up my house anymore Joe so get it sorted will you.

[Pauline leaves. Joe is left wondering what to do]

Cut To:

Vic downstairs. Int. Daylight. 15.55

[Dawn is collecting empty glasses. Goes to the table where Martin & Gus are talking in time to hear:]

Martin: I just don’t know what I did wrong Gus, I really don’t!

Gus: Don’t worry mate, you did everything you could for your marriage, Sonia is the one who wasn’t making the effort.

Martin: I mean I even booked a trip to Paris for her [beat] & I’ve still got the tickets. I suppose I’d better give them to mum & Joe, I’ve got no use for them now.

[Dawn turns round with a smile on her face, goes back to the bar & speaks to Peggy]

Dawn: you know Peggy, what you were saying earlier, I think you might be right I do need to go out & have more of a laugh

Peggy: There you go then.

[Martin walks towards the bar, Gus has just left]

Martin. How are you? [Doesn’t give him a chance to answer] You look like you’re in need of cheering up. Dawn here is just finishing her shift. Why don’t you let her join you for a drink….…on me of course.

[Martin looks uncomfortable at being put on the spot, Dawn stands looking expectantly]

Martin: That’s really kind of you Peggy…

Peggy: Right that’s settled then. Dawn

Dawn: Cheers Peggy

[Dawn beams at Martin, and Martin smiles meekly back. Peggy hands them their drinks and they both go and sit down at a booth. Just as they have sat down Sonia and Naomi come into the pub and go to the bar. Sonia immediately sees Martin sitting with Dawn; they look quite cosy and are chatting away. Dawn looks as though she’s in flirting mode. Sonia looks gobsmacked & Naomi obviously realises what Sonia is thinking]

Naomi: well at least he is moving on….. maybe he’ll leave us alone now.

Sonia: Yeah….

Naomi: That is what you want isn’t it?

Sonia: Yeah, of course it is [not very convincingly]

Naomi: Look, if seeing him…. [Sonia gives a sharp look]…if this changes things let me know now okay?

Sonia: No, no Naomi I’ve made the right decision, it’s just you know I didn’t think he’d move on this quickly…. But you’re right he might leave us alone now, and it’s good to see he’s getting on with things.

[Naomi goes to order, Sonia looks back at them, martin notices & looks guilty, and dawn tries to pull him back into conversation. Sonia looks upset]

Dawn: we can go somewhere else if you like, why not make a night of it and go over to Scarlett’s?

Martin: yeah sounds good

[They get up to leave, Sonia moves towards Martin]

Sonia: Martin I need to talk to you

Martin: Yeah, well I’ve got nothing to say to you!

[Dawn and he are practically out the door& Pauline can be seen making her way into the pub]

Sonia: But Martin it’s important!

Martin: I don’t care Sonia, I’m busy; I’m moving on…. [Dawn smiles at this]…. isn’t that what you wanted?

[Sonia looks hurt. Dawn and Martin leave and Pauline enters the pub]

Pauline: You deserved that. He’s better off without you, & I’m glad he’s finally realised that.

[Pauline barges past Sonia, and Naomi angrily confronts Sonia]

Naomi: What was all that about? I thought you said that you weren’t bothered?

Sonia: I’m sorry Naomi I just….

Naomi: oh forget it, I’ll see you later.

[Naomi storms off across the square]

Sonia: Naomi!

[Sonia is left standing alone. She hesitates and decides not to stay in the pub where Pauline will be glaring her. She goes also leaves the Vic to follow Naomi]

Gary: Oh you certainly are a lot of help Carly, that’s for sure

[They start to leave the garage]

Carly: Thanks Gary. I must find Phil & thank him too. I know we didn’t get off to a great start & now he’s given me my job back I’d better make amends.

Gary: Are you sure you want to do that Carly; I mean you’ve met Phil now and he’s not exactly the type that’s into niceties.

....... I stopped watching "Enders" when the scripts got so stupid it seemed as if the proverbial team of monkeys had taken over (as a break from the 'rewrite the works of Shakespeare' homework they'd been set :grin

Your offering is no worse than anything from the pens & fevered imaginations of those PAID obscene sums to write EE scripts, and seems to be in the right 'style' to fit in!

You've reminded me of something I have lying on file, from when one of my favourite characters, JACK, was written out of "Casualty". I was so annoyed I wrote an episode in which he returns to the series, but put it on one side before I'd completed it. I'm tempted to polish it up and post it on GW to get some response from people whose opinions I respect ..... :grin

Agreed that sometimes programmes on tv, I wouldn't just restrict the comments to east enders!, can be, shall we say disappointing. Some story lines/dramas seem so predictable that I thought if someone is getting paid to do that why cant I?!!!

I have as I said this in as an imitation of an enders script got to get accepted before you start changing things eh?!

Anyway gald I jogged your memory Bags.

oh and for some reason this post has appeared twice!

Send in a 'mole' ..... !

As in the best MI5 traditions, you get better intelligence (a commodity in short supply in EE scripts! :grin ) if you have a 'mole' on the inside ..... 8)

Watch this space for my way of working Jack back into the "Casualty" team - will attempt to find time over the holiday w/end!! :grin

I've just got into soaps as my social life has collapsed (see comedy post) And I have to say yours read like the real thing.Idon't know all the characters yet, but I got the gist. You not only got the characters right but the "feel" of it as well. The dialogue seemed ok but what was missing was the subtext. I once attended a seminar at my Arts Centre given by a TV director and he said the problem with most scripts is subtext. The first thing an actor does with a script is look for the subtext or he has nothing to act But as you say it is an imitation of EE so that would have been difficult. But send it in and best of luck. I've hearad the money is great if you can get in

I have never been into this part of the site before and I'm very happy to see the usual faces. I think this is too long to read to be honest, and plus I don't watch Eastenders.

I prefer Fasten Your Seatbelt.

Mrs B you have actually reminded me that I have'nt added my subtexts that go in before each scene starts! Ta very much for that! I was in such a rush to get it finished and sent off i nearly neglected a vital part!
