Monsters!
By JD
15 April 2006
i wrote this for my children

Within my imagination lurks a monster

Of such incredible size and shape

It only appears when I am alone

In the shadows he lays in wait

For this thing it only likes the dark

As it’s far too ugly to be seen

So within my days he floats away

To a land beyond my dreams……………………………………………

There was a time I clearly saw it

And it looked so very red

I just could not help for laughing

At this creatures slapstick head

Its ears were where its nose should be

And its nose was on its chin

Its chin was above its forehead

(Such a silly looking thing!)

It’s eyes searched with antenna

As the antenna’s hang from chest

The chest replaced its stomach

(How may this thing digest!)

There were toes upon its hands

As it’s hands took place to feet

Its fingered feet were on its elbows

(Yet each digit still complete!)

The outer was like leather

And the voice was such a howl

Its teeth were as blunt razor

(That’s why it’s breath was “Oh” so fowl!)

So when my imagination is running wild

I stop, and try so hard to think

Not of them frightening, eating monsters

But of that slapstick looking thing!…………………………

MONSTERS

I would be interested to know what your children thought of your poem, and what age are they? I read my own poetry to children, (6 and 7 year olds) - and they have very vivid imaginations. They have told me that if they read about monsters when they go to bed, many of them get dreadful nightmares. Their minds are not mature enough to cope with frightening things. When I read to them, they sit on the floor (about 20 of them) and you could hear a pin drop. They are 100 per cent concentrating, and everything is serious to them. As I say funny things they will suddenly laugh (but much more exaggerated laughter than adults) or they will suddenly go very serious, and when I have finished they are dying to add something. Yes, be careful. Their little worlds are not the same as ours, and they would believe that you had seen your monster. I wouldn't write such a poem myself. If you look at my website, you will see the children's poem "My Three Little Aliens". That is as far as I would go.

Hi Josie,
my children are 11 and 8, i have wrote many poems for them, so i feel it is different when they read my work as they know that mummy is playing.
i will add another poem in a minute that i wrote for my daughter, she asked me to write a poem about a princess and then another time of what mummy thought of monsters, therefore i was writing them for her.
see what you think of my princess poem to show you the different ways that i write for them.
thanks
