No illusion unshattered.
By BrianRobertNeal
22 April 2006
An old piece given a minor re-write. Certain singers and groups such as Kate Bush, Neil Young, and Coldplay can touch me with their Lyrics.

NO ILLUSION UNSHATTERED

*LYRICS QUOTED ARE THE COPYWRIGHT OF KATE BUSH AND ARE FROM HER COMPOSITION “A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING”. PUBLISHED ON THE CD TITLED DEEPER UNDERSTANDING.*

*AS THE PEOPLE HERE GET COLDER*

Why are people so unfriendly nowadays? I used to be very gregarious and now look at me. Like most of my age the children made me introspective and I tended to run my life round them, finding little time for friends. Now they have lives of their own and these seem to exclude me, apart from Weddings, birthdays, Christmases and baptisms. Or when they need money!

*I TURN TO MY COMPUTER*

I went to an adult evening class to learn how to use these contraptions. I was twice the age of most on the course and was politely cold shouldered. I suppose they were frightened that my ageing might rub off on them. I’ve got Broadband and it’s amazing, you can contact anybody no matter where they are. Makes me think of Hancock in the “Radio Ham”, you know “Friends all over the world but none in this country”.

*AND SPEND MY EVENINGS WITH IT LIKE A FRIEND*

In from work, grab a snack and then boot up. Sometimes I wander like a cloud, hit a search and then go from link to link. However I have my favourites. I must break out of this but how. The Pubs are all youth oriented, and grab a granny nights are too ghastly to consider. Club 1830 might be the answer. That’s not Club18-30 but the one that ought to exist for people who look like they were born no later than 1830.

I’ve got to talking to the MicroSoft Paper-Clip. I’m often telling him he’s a good boy when he reminds me to do something I’ve forgotten to do such as “make a save”.

*ARE YOU LONELY ARE YOU LOST?*

Yes.

I get up and eject the CD, for I can take no more. Katie I love you because you understand my situation so well. But I hate you because you have so poignantly described my circumstance and have left me with no illusion unshattered.

Welcome ??? to our 'civilised' society

A sad indictment of society, but an accurate one. Until recently I'd have arguesd that it's a tad OTT, but no longer - not since I read of a crowd of shoppers parting and walking AROUND someone who'd had a heart attack and DIED in the middle of a busy town centre as if he wasn't even there ...........

When I lived in London an old man living on the same floor of our block of flats passed away. When I said I hadn't seen him for a while our caretaker said he wasn't ALLOWED to go up/telephone to see if the gentleman was OK (he quoted the Data Protection Act, believe it or not!!!)

The first time anyone reacted was SIX WEEKS LATER when someone from the Council called to see why he hadn't been paying his rent .....

:eek Nobody cares about anyone else any more :sigh

I often wonder how Kylie fans manage to get some solace from the music. Have you got the latest kate Bush ?.I think she really speaks to women, some of her lyrics on that are very poignant.

"Hancock in the “Radio Ham”, you know “Friends all over the world but none in this country”.

that really made me laugh out loud it's even more true with the internet, now.
I sometimes think we attribute more to the lyrics of a song than are actually there.
I love a song by a portugese singer, Joao Cardiera, listening to it brings me to tears however when translated the song is a complaint about the EEC sardine quotas
hey-ho
good piece made me think
Mrs B
PS I look forward to your next HB post
Enjoyed it

Like most people who read, or write, or think - i love reading stuff like this, that speaks volumes in a few words.
To discuss it requires an almighty post, but the writing can be.
Liked the title - very apt. I also appreciate the clipped style you use. It gets the message across very well.
And i totally agree with your comment re song lyrics - i could put most of my life to my favourite lyrics - which, Bagheera, should give you hope - there are people who care, out there. :)
Thanks Bagee, BBS, Steve.

I wanted to review your stuff, but there is an embarrassment of riches. I just read Am Dram - that was great, but I decided to review this instead. Why? 'Cos I'm a great KB fan I suppose.

You brilliantly invoke the technomania of modern society, with its condemnation of ageism as well. Nice that you get the point across that so many senior citizens are more computer literate than the young. The Hancock reference is apt too - the comparison is often made between the Internet and radio hams.

The format is unusual, but hard hitting, and very effective.
Thanks-SammoR

I often try different formats and approaches. I'm a great KB fan and this song "rings me".

It's great when something that moves me, can move others as well,

I'll look out for your next piece,

Brian.
