Poetry
Shackles
By Psimple
01 May 2006
This was a dramatic poem that was done in conjunction with a dance.  The dance  begins with the spoken poetry, and continues into a song by "Mary, Mary" of the same title - Shackles.

The poem addresses the reality of feeling far from a God who promises to be close.
What do we shackle our Worship with?

Shackles!

(Single reader on stage, but off to the side, out of the way and a single dancer who dances through the lyrics of the poem.  Poem is read (memorized) powerfully, and full of the emotion of the words and the struggle, as well as full of freedom and triumph as the song begins and victory is claimed in Jesus’ Name)

Gravity, of life, of my circumstances, of my today.
The weight anchors, pulls and shoves me down.
Alone, it’s enough, to bind me here, to steal my joy
To stop my dance.

Gravity, of life, joined by The enemy, aided in it’s pursuit
Of all I hold dear, of every celebration.
The enemy, seeking to chain me down, to hold me back
To stop my dance.

The music, the song, battles against
The darkness, the lies, the seductive whispers
Of who I once was, of who I AM NOT
Unable to dance.

Unseen enemy, Around every corner
Under every rock,
Stalking, hunting, lurking, roaming
Despising the dance.

How long, O Lord, Will I be bound
Afflicted, Besieged, Distressed.
Struck down!
Desperate to dance.

How far, O Lord, away are You?
Reaching, stretching, grasping
Searching, Will I find?
The Giver of the dance?

Muscles strain, nerves scream, alone and within
The battle rages on
A desperate fight
To dance my dance.

My cry is heard, I am not alone
His hand reaches down, to grasp my own
And I rise to fight, to struggle, to wage war
To free these feet
To dance His dance

(Music starts)
Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance
The enemies chains and lies
I just wanna praise You
Will not hold me down
I just wanna praise You
Will not stop this dance
You broke the chains, now I can lift my hands
Because my Lord holds the key
I just wanna praise You
To SET ME FREE!!
I just wanna praise You…
AND I WILL DANCE!!!
Music continues…
Reader exits
Dancer does what Suzi says! J)
