A Little Spring Must Fall
By Psimple

Warning!!!  This is an article based in faith.
I'm looking for critique on the actual writing.  If you are not a believer in the Christian faith and it will offend you to read something about it, please feel free to skip this one.  If you can get past the faith and scriptures, I would love the feedback on the writing itself...or anything else.
Thanks

I love winter!

I love everything about it. The snow, the cold, the biting wind and the brutal wind chills. I love fireplaces and blankets, good coffee and curling up with a great book while the snow and wind beat against the windows. But even I will admit a longing for warmer days, a desire to see something fresh and new and green growing from the cold, brown earth.

Working in a church affords me the unique opportunity to view the changing of the seasons before they actually happen. No sooner do we wrap up our final Christmas service than our worship arts director begins to give us glimpses of the Easter season! The promise of something new, something unexpected, something we’ve never done before, something that lures us all forward through our winter exhaustion.

What about our walk with the Lord? What season are you in? I would imagine that some of us are experiencing a winter of the soul. There can be times in our lives when we simply don’t want to learn anything new. I will admit to raising my face to the heavens and crying out “Enough! I don’t want to stretch and grow anymore! I want to wrap myself in the blanket of spiritual slumber and wait out the storm.”

But into each winter, a little spring must fall. And just around the corner, I catch a glimmer of the Son. The warmth of the Holy Spirit beckons. I’ve spent time in winter slumber, perhaps healing and resting, but my limbs long to stretch again, to reach for something new.

In Colossians Chapter 3, God’s voice moves me to action.

So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ--that's where the action is. See things from his perspective. Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire. Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.

Colossians 3: 2&10 (The Message)

New is good! God tells us to “Look up! And be alert to what is going on around Christ.”

The season of winter serves an important purpose. It allows a weary world to rest, to store up its strength, to heal and prepare. The death of winter makes way for the incredible bursting life and energy of spring! As we move closer to Spring and the Easter season, examine closely the spiritual work winter has been doing in your soul. Take a deep breath and throw off the old clothes you’ve been bundled up in. Throw them in the fire and get dressed up in your Easter best! Throw open the windows and the doors and grab tight to your Father’s hand. I can’t wait to see where He leads us this spring!

Like a warm blanket on a cold winters night.

I am not christian but am passionately interested in the way religions ae impacted history and constantly amazed by the way, to this day christianity moves people to great things.

I liked this because it was not a preach, it was an acknowledgement as such I thought you did yourself an injustice by the faith warning at the top. 5 in 6 people in this world would have moved on.

Two final points;

one
"But into each winter, a little spring must fall." are these your own words? They are fantastic and fully expect them to appear in something i write in the short to medium term, after which you can sue me for plaguerism and we can get famous in court for 5 minutes.

two
I am always interested by people that quote 'the word of god' and then produce a modern english translation of greek texts dating from the 4th century that were previously copied at the hand of men for two hundred years.

I look forward to seeing more though
The whole picture

I will happily comment on the writing as you ask.
It is declamitory in style. It reads like it was written to be spoken. The sentences are quite short and of equal length with few sub-ordinate clauses, which all make it easy to speak. It also makes it easy to read. And it is quite seductively optomistic and inspirational. The last paragraph in particular puts a positve spin on winter, leading us into spring.
What does worry me about this is it one dimensional and simplistic and I believe you are a a good writer and well aware of this. Winter can be a killer and sees off the old an infirm, give us both sides in your writing,a little reality won't damage the optomistic tone but add credibility. You have a pleasing style why not go for the whole picture. I mean no offence and I felt your work was worthy of comment

A couple things...
If you plaguerize me, please write something really controversial so that we can grab at least 15 minutes of fame. (yes, the phrase is my own)

The disclaimer felt "off" to me also, I don't apologize for my faith or beliefs, however, some on this board seem a bit "put off" by my faith, so I wanted to be upfront about what the article invovled. No sneaky preachy here. But, point taken.

Thanks for the critique.

Thanks for the review.

To be honest, I didn't mean to be simplistic, I would have to work hard to find the negative side of winter. I think I could re work this to add some depth to the "winter of the soul" section. Comparing the death of nature to the grief that comes in life...I'll give that some thought, I think you make a really good point.

Man I love to learn and grow!! It's good to be challenged again!

Wow that is such a positive and life affirming attitude. I think I envy you that.I'm so glad you took my comments positively, sometimes when i say things they are misunderstood but you reacted so positively that I couldn't help but be affected by it.Your openminded attitude puts me to shame.
