The short story:  Short story mode is very different from novel mode.   Golden rule when writing a short story - if it doesn't move the plot along you don't need it.

I suppose she means: Leave out anything which is not asked for by the plot. A very useful advice, which goes for any writing, including novels, scientific papers or even a shopping list.  
Still though, something writers sometimes do forget.
