I have attempted to lengthen this but, for me, this expresses all the sentiment that needs to be expressed for the moment. I might with experience change my mind on this and be able to add more but for now just 4 lines will do!
We are but a pebble on the shore, Our significance is not less or more, Whether rich and powerful or poor, We are only a pebble on the shore. |
Pebbles on the shore Written by Josie (2849 comments posted) 7th May 2006 | | I disagree. We may feel like pebbles on the shore - and we will feel isolated and lost when we have been rejected by those we love - but the Bible tells us that in God's eyes we are known by Him and loved and that he knows every hair on our head. We should love one another and then this feeling of isolation which is so real to many people (including me) would not exist. Unfortunately we never hear of people genuinely loving one another in the news - only of the hatred shown by one person to another. Love breeds love and hate breeds hate. Enough said. | Nice sentiment Written by Bottleblondesurfer (3590 comments posted) 7th May 2006 | | You said all that needed to be said in those 4 lines. Don't listen to Josie because god and the bible has provoked more hate and murder and mayhem than any anything on the planet.Yours was the truer sentiment.Enough said | Written by brook_rivers (486 comments posted) 7th May 2006 | Thanks for both of your comments - it looks like I have sparked a religious debate. While its lovely that you can have such a positive view of the Bible I have to agree with Mrs B on this. As I said in the intro maybe in time I maybe able to reconcile myself with the Christian religion but for me at the moment as Mrs B says the Bible has a lot to answer for - the repression of women for centuaries, the degrading of homosexuals, countless religious wars ect ect. Maybe I shouldn't have studied philosophy & religion but there are so many contradictions, myths, mistakes in the Bible I really can not see how someone can put all their faith into it. Don't get me wrong I uphold morals that are essential for humanity and then some - I am a veggie, anti-abortianist ect but anyway this is going off the point! The poem for me was less about god and religion & more about the fact that we are all equal in this life, no one should be deemed more important or significant in anyway as at the end of the day we are all human. Also the poem was saying that amoungst the inexpressible number of people who live on this earth we in reality are very small. | Written by scrump999 (8 comments posted) 15th May 2006 | i really think you got your point across in this poem. i really like it's simplicity and agree with the sentiment. Not everything has to be brought back to religion sometimes it's nice to think of us as part of nature. Being by the ocean always makes me feel so small and i realise there is a much bigger picture out there. But remember a pebble on the beach is never alone xx | Wow this is deep Written by mishmish (389 comments posted) 2nd June 2006 | Amazing how you can encapsulate so much into just a few lines. This is real powerful writing, brook. It's beautiful. Immediately, the 'pebble' analogy came over as incredibly deep. That whatever happens in life, there is much, much more we don't know. Just the same as a pebble doesn't know what's happening at the other end of the beach, we don't know what's happening in this thing called life. We only get mere glimpses. And in the end, we are all equal, despite what trappings we acquire during our journey, at the end of our journey, we are that pebble, waiting to be carried somewhere... Brilliant writing... best wishes mishmish |
