If you're masticating over Miss Milton or breathing new life into The Old Guys, then either you're indulging in obscene behaviour, or else working on your entry to the BBC Last Laugh contest. If you're in the vicinity of Watford (that's in the UK, folks) on 23rd April, then the Watford Writers are hosting a comedy workshop to give everyone a helpful nudge. You could say the Watford Writers are filling a much needed gap. No, that didn't really justify the headline, did it? I give up - full details on the event after the jump. Over now to the official blurb: Although the program is centered around using the BBC 'The Last Laugh' writing competition, and the scripts will be used to work with and for discussion of characters, comedy and plots. Anyone who is writing for the competition is invited to bring along your writing if you'd like to discuss specifics with other writers and speakers. Anyone with an interest in writing comedy will find benefit, have a good afternoon AND a few laughs. There will be three speakers: Ester Coleman Hawkins - who is the project leader for 'The Last Laugh' - she will talk generally on sitcom writing, and about the competition - giving pointers on layout, the characters in the scripts, where to begin, discussing the judges, and the process. Alex Lowe - comedy writer, who presented at the group recently - Alex will talk specifically about the plot threads, and how to 'find the laughs' - how to add comedy into what you are writing, through the plot and characters. Brad Ashton - Top writer for many years - credits include the hit shows '3-2-1' ; Saturday Night at the Palladium etc. He has wroked with such names as Ken Dodd, John Cleese, Jasper Carrot, Eamon Andrews etc. He is a life time member of the Writers Guild of Great Britain and has recently published his second book entitled ' Creating comedy and writing for TV'. - Brad will talk generally on comedy writing and some of his experiences - he will also sign copies of his latest book.
