Stand-Up Liverpool

Budding stand-up comics should get themselves to The Pilgrim pub in Liverpool for a series of beginner workshops offering advice on everything from tackling stage fright to eliminating self-criticism (if only...). It runs on Saturdays from July - August and their blurbage follows after the jump.

Stand-Up Liverpool Comedy Workshops at The Pilgrim, Pilgrim Street, Liverpool

Timeframe

Workshops: 1st July – 19 August on Saturday afternoons between 1.00 - 3.00 pm
Showcase: Tuesday 22nd August 8.45 pm
Format: 2 hour sessions for 8 weeks culminating in a stand-up comedy showcase.
 

Content

This is a beginner workshop that will offer a range of comedy writing and performance techniques including

  • tackling stage fright
  • generating material
  • building a routine
  • audience rapport
  • eliminating self-criticism
  • in-the-moment spontaneous joke-cracking (riffing)
 
It offers the chance to explore, play, experiment with stand-up comedy in an
inspiring and supportive environment. The workshops are targeted at anyone interested in giving stand-up a try (ages 18 +).
 

Elements of the course

  • Introduction to Stand-up Comedy: what works, what does not work (opinions, open forum)
  • Intro's – how would an audience see me on stage. How does this audience see me on stage?
  • Developing an 'Attitude' on stage
  • The Cognitive State of Effectiveness approach to stand-up comedy:
- Giving up control
- No self-esteem
- Validation
- Parrot on shoulder
- Upwriting
- No judging
  • Weekly open mike sessions with topics thrown out
  • Improvisation
  • Seminars with Professionals currently on the comedy circuit
 

Cost

£10 per week or £70 for all 8 weeks – Student discount will apply. All participants must bring at least 3 people to the final Stand-Up Liverpool Showcase (Tickets £4 each).
