Nuclear War
By brook_rivers
21 May 2006
This won a poetry competition several years ago on the theme of war.

The earth rumbles like a dragon in a cave,

Missiles and nuclear warheads sending people to the grave,

A blinding flash causes screaming,

All the while people dreaming,

Of the life before devastation,

All made by a human beings creation

The fireball is coming,

Everyone starts running,

All around the dead and the dying,

Lost and lonely children crying,

Charred, blackened and scared,

People began to wander if they dared,

Calling for their loved ones,

The ones they would miss,

The black rain fell with radiation,

Causing more havoc and panic upon the poisonous desolation,

‘What will become of me and you?’

‘Will we all get sick and die too?’

These were the questions the living ones asked.

Only time would tell the fate of a nuclear bombs survivors,

But now there are none alive to tell us.

a well written, thought-provoking piece brook. Heaven forbid that it should ever come to this, but with rogue countries like Iran..well anything is possible.

That's powerful

It's made me shiver, so evocative your imagery I could hear the screams in my ears.

It reminds me of a line in the book I'm writing, after the quantum bomb hit:

"...People screamed, running frantically out of their shops, their houses, their offices…their lives. But there was no refuge. No place of retreat from the all-encompassing, accursed force that rocked their world and took their lives in the second it hit."

I can see why it won the award. No contest in my opinion.

Brilliant!

best wishes
