Alex's Book
By Tigermoons
26 May 2006
Was just thinking about children and came up with this. Brilliance can start from a young age...

Alex sat in his room and looked out the window to all the children playing. The hot summer sun was bright on their faces as they ran through the sprinkler. His elbows rested on the windowsill, and his hands held his chin. He imagined the children were imps dancing around a sprinkler that spat fire. He imagined everything. The boy's mind was like a book of endless fairytales, an infinite trail of magic and what ifs.

But though his mind was brilliant, his brilliance was mistaken for something else.

His mother peered around the corner and looked at her son, a sigh escaping her lips. "Alex," She spoke softly, "Why don't you go out and play with the other children?" It was a hopeless attempt. He shook his head and looked to his small hands, which now fell to his lap. His mother bit her lip, then turned from the boy and left for the kitchen, where her endless tasks awaited her.

Alex turned from the window and the muffled laughs of the children. The sight was a happy one to anyone. Anyone but Alex. He pulled a big empty book from underneath his bed and opened it up. He laid on the floor with the blank book open in front of him and closed his eyes. It all came to him like a rushing river, it spilled into his mind and took him off on great adventures. He imagined a girl dancing from cloud to cloud, singing a beautiful song.

He imagined a man with dark eyes reaching up and grasping the fluffy white clouds, turning them gray and filling them full of tears. He imagined them talking, imagined a argument, then an adrenaline pumping fight. Thunder rolled in the sky with each blow, and lightening flashed like the notes that poured forth from the graceful woman's song. Than he opened his eyes. He looked to the book and saw his thoughts there, saw his story in the words. He smiled to himself and closed his eyes again.

He could do that all day, pretend and imagine, letting his genius print upon the paper magically. He opened his eyes again after flying through the sky on the back of a panda and saw his twin sister standing in his doorway, dripping wet from her sprinkler activities. "You should have came out!" She beamed, "We had so much fun! We played tag and had popsicles, then went to Jason's house!" She smiled a smile, showing that her front tooth was missing.

"Well," Started Alex, feeling only a little discouraged, "I saw a fight of the gods and rode through the air on a panda!" He pushed his book towards his sister. She squatted down and squinted at the pages, "But Alex, there's nothing in that book!" She laughed. Alex shook his head, "Its there. You just don’t see it." And with that he closed the book quickly and hugged it to his chest. His sister gave him a questionable look, "You're silly." she said and she skipped to her mother who still worked in the kitchen.

When she was out of sight Alex opened the book again, and saw that the words were there. They were there for him.

I like your writing, you seem to slip outside of the normal, ordinary, everyday realm into a very vivid place very easily...

Look forward to more
