New Zealand Mythology

This is the only attempt I've made to write humorous poetry- I hope it does come across as humorous, rather than bitter! I've been away from home too long...

Faces light up
When they find out
I come from New Zealand.
What's it like? they ask.
Is it sunny all year?
Do you go to the beach
Every day,
Like on "Neighbours"
Or "Home and Away"?

I say
those shows
are set
in
Australia.

They don't care.

How's Gandalf?
They ask.
And Aslan, King Kong
- does he get in the way
of the traffic?
(this is
the point
where I
should laugh)
And what is it like
Surfing all day
And coming back home
to the shire?

I say,
No, it's not always sunny.
In fact, it rains quite a lot.
There's a few problems with the economy
- Aslan's been sold to Japan, he's long gone.
King Kong left because of pollution
And there's racial dilemmas galore
The shire has been bulldozed over
To make way for a new shopping mall.

But,
yes.
The beaches
are
quite
nice.

Our son spent a year in NZ with his girlfriend after they finished university, and they loved it!

liked the piece by the way...

NZ is a wonderful place, and the year we spent there in 1976 would have to rank in my memories as top of the list. I enjoyed your poem but felt like you were not giving it good enough praise. The beaches are wonderful and nearly empty (at least in 1976) but there is so much more.
thank you!

thanks for all your comments :) they are greatly appreciated. I agree that it is a wonderful country, and my intent was not to put it down in any way, but to draw humour from the fact that many I have met seem to view it as a kind of paradise. Though it is indeed beautiful, it has many problems which the world doesn't know about- a lot of people only know New Zealand for its beautiful scenery, which is where the beaches joke comes in!
