Damn! Can't stop writing ...
Looking out of my window again. Top floor flat, top of a hill, in rural Sussex. I am not going to be here for long now. It is beautiful. Its spring, end of May, probably summer. I was not really that good with the seasons.
Its Bank Holiday Monday. The day has been a combination of torrential rain and overcast skies. Right now its sunset and the golden sun reaches out across the whole countryside. Its so beautiful, did I say that already?
I wish I knew the names of tree's I could tell you exactly what sat where, but I don't. I can only describe them.
There are trees everywhere, thin branches and small leaves, high majestic trunks with branches fanning out in all directions, too far to see the leaves but they are definitely green. There are round trees, tall and thin and those naked, save for a modest smattering of green after the attentions of a man and his chainsaw. Wherever you look there are trees and in these every conceivable shade of green, even more so with the suns golden fingers caressing each leaf and exposed branch. In between these, dotted frequently are 20th century houses, two up, two down. Chimneys everywhere. Its warm, but some emit smoke and others the haze of heat. That confuses me a bit, isn't the heat meant to be inside?
The brickwork cast against the brilliant shades of green is startling, natural red, brilliant painted white and occasionally a touch of marigold for good measure.
Away in the distance the land slopes away towards the south downs, a myriad of tree tops, every shade of green in the sunlight interspersed with the occasionally church spire. I know there are a hundred villages between here and the downs but apart from the churches not one can be seen.
I know this scene plays out across Europe, but not for the first time I think to the beauty of this England, my country, for which I love for all its ills.

A beautiful and vivid description but it's not so much This England as Your England it certainly isn't mine, living in the industrial heartland but I suppose the huge diversity of the country is it's greatest virtue, that and the easy availability of chocolate. You do have a gift for description, which would enhance a story, why not find your self a plot and some characters and with your descriptive powers I'm sure it would be a winner BBS |

Thanks for the compliment but was that a dig 'find yourself a plot and some characters' .... I have course have writen four parts of a plotted, character driven story which are posted in Extended which you have already commented on. So either you forgot or you dont think my story is well characterised or plotted. Either way, this is all fun. Thanks for the comment. |

I know and have commented on your fiction, jbg, sometimes I say stuff which I hope gets across in a ironic way I try to make the reviews sparky and fun, sometimes I gauge it wrong. It was more a dig at the concept of non-fiction,I mean where's the story? I always find something from your work to inspire a comment which I love doing. cheers BBS |

Don't stop writing just let it flow. Re BBS there is not an ounce of malice in her soul and she reads and comments on so many other writers' pieces and her comments make the web-site burst with life. "I am not going to be here for long now. "- I do so hope that you only mean that you will be moving to another house and nothing more ominous. By the way thank you for reminding me that I use to try to write plays. I might have another go, at least getting it to the end of Act 1 Thanks for intriguing read and for your time and comments, Brian. |

the reason i wont be there for much longer is because I spend half my life behind pedestrian volvo's, elderly and tractors. The nearest main road is 40 minutes away and the m25 an hour. Its basically 90 minutes extra drive to everywhere I go so am picking up and moving lock stock and two smoking barrells to Berkshire which maybe we will hear about in the future. Many thanks for all your comments. |

Leo, I know what you mean - but I got time off for good behaviour!! NW of EWngland is better than many other areas - but we've made the decision to move "lock stock and two smokin' barrels" to a beautiful part of the world which is almost 8 TIMES the size of the UK but with a population og LESS than that of Greater London. Lebensraum indeed! Sweden, here we come!!!!!! |
