Watching my Mother
By sallyj
22 April 2005
Written just after my father died, and I realised that I was all my Mother had left

Watching my Mother as she brushes her hair
I wonder, just how does she bear
The awful pain of being alone
After 53 years with another, grown
To rely on him being always there.

I wonder why she just doesn't tear
Nails from her fingers, her head from her hair
The pain from her eyes. Into turmoil I'm thrown
Watching my Mother.

My mind screams in anguish "Why couldn't you spare
Her this dreadful despair"
To a spirit who's deaf, my words he'll disown
Blind to my anger. He'll gaze calmly down
Watching me, trusting me, knowing I'm there
Watching my Mother

A bit stilted in places but I think that could be solved by a bit of editing on the layout. I found 'Her this dreadful despair' too short to read well in the verse.

Fantastic emotion - your feelings at the time are obvious in the writing and that's what makes it so great. A very honest piece.

I love this, and your conveyal [is that a word?...oh well, tis now] is indeed fantastic

however, although i don't have a problem with the layout, i think the last stanza could do with a bit of reworking...in fact i think jsut the first couple of lines of it.

otherwise, it's a great poem, good luck with it
