A what if scenario

Jimmy and I go back a long way, to our earliest days at Medical School. He is now an Emeritus Professor, but I'm just a G.P. However we've kept in touch. I was fascinated when I received an invitation to attend his Press Conference. So out of curiosity I went to it.

Jimmy was usually modest when he revealed his findings. But not today, He told the world, that he would reveal a new technique to revolutionise the treatment of Wound Infection. Jimmy, was as ever, fastidious in his presentation, which took over two hours.

He asked for questions. Everyone was enthusiastic except me. I said nothing, but God how I wish I had asked the question that had run round my head. So much Human suffering would have been avoided.

I should have stood up and said, "So, le'ts re-cap.

You have found a Bacterium that only attacks diseased tissues.

You've identified the organic chemical produced by Healthy tissue that kills the Bacterium.

You have bred a mutation of this Bacterium which is hyper-sensistive to that chemical.

Laboratory tests on volunteer patients has confirmed that only diseased tissue is killed.

My question is "What would happen if it, of its own accord, mutated and developed a tolerance to this Chemical""

We unfortunately know the answer: MRSA.

Too true

It might be a what if situation but MRSA is certainly real enough. It was a clever and powerful piece with a stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks ending. This resonated with me because my partner lost an aunt to MRSA. She went into hospital with a minor stroke and while recovering contracted it. It was 2 days admitted it and she only survived another 3. Mike was gutted. It is a very underrated killer
A concise topical piece
