If I Gave You
By lordspudz
23 June 2006
In the name of love, what would we give?

If I gave you flowers
Would you watch them grow and bloom,
Would you love them, nurture them
Or would you see them wither and die,
Sit back and applaud their final gasp for life.

If I gave you money
Would you save it, keep it for a rainy day,
Would you spend it wisely?
Or would you squander your last penny,
Then weep for the folly of a thousand fools.

If I gave you hope
Would you champion that hope,
Would you rise and greet it head-on
Or would you turn it away,
Happy to languish in convenient pessimism.

If I gave you my heart
Would you crush it with your passion,
Would you drink from its river of benevolence?
Or would you stab it, tear it, break it,
Would you tell me then that you love me?

Choices in Love
Written by mishmish (389 comments posted) 1st July 2006
I really liked this poem very much indeed. The rythm and the flow of each verse is well constructed and I like the idea of polarity, the choices that we are faced with in love:

Would you love them, nurture them
Or would you see them wither and die,

The third verse:

If I gave you hope
Would you champion that hope,
Would you rise and greet it head-on
Or would you turn it away,
Happy to languish in convenient pessimism.

absolutely tells to me that hope is harder to focus on, to achieve, than 'convenient pessimism'...Not believing and accepting is the easy way out.

You have captured the choices we make in love, how hard it can be, beautifully.

Really well done!

Best wishes
